Tasting fruit in paradise

Actually, escaping the inferno of AZ.  The only bad part is that I missing some ripe figs.   I also wonder if the figs are surviving with my questionable drip system setup.  Hope I don't come back to a  sink hole either or a swarm of ants.   Well can't worry about it now.

Here in Oahu, I found some not so common fruits.

The "honey cream pineapple" is only grown here and it is very delicious.  Really did taste creamy.   Well worth eating if you are here.   It's dark green on outside and white/creamy on inside and guaranteed to be the sweetest pineapple.   It was more than sweet.  It had great taste.

Mountain apple brought over from neighbors.  Trying to get more, but can't find in the stores.  Extremely delicious.  Sweet and tasty, a hint of rose, but not overpowering.   I saved some seeds to see if I can grow.   Does anyone know if this is closely related to "wax jambu?"  I've had that before, but taste is completely different and texture is a bit less crunchy than wax jambu, and more pear like.   I'm growing "black pearl" wax jambu, but it will be years before I get any fruit.

Kaimana Lychee - tastes great and no cloying aftertaste.

Still waiting for mamey sapote to ripen.  Can't wait because I never tried one before.

If you're ever in Hawaii, try out the great local fruit.

Also, here is one of the most beautiful and striking trees, the Double Chaconia.  Anyone growing this rare tree and can it grow in a subtropical environment?  I'd love to grow this.

Lastly, found someone growing some figs that are quite big for such a small tree.  They look great with very tight eye and doing well with daily on/off rain.   Don't know the variety though.

Island hope and go visit Ken Love to see how his figs are doing! :)

Yes! http://www.frankiesnursery.com/

not too long ago, i never really cared too much about fresh fruits. heck, never really cared for fruits. now, i have to have fresh fruits. there is nothing like them. it must be the fig thing.. i need to go to hawaii and taste some of those.. when my kids are out of college.. and they are still in elementry/jhs. x)

Yeah, most of these fruits above are from Frankie's. That's a picture of Frankie on the pineapple. He patented that variety so you can only get it from him. You can no longer roam around the entire nursery because when they started selling the fruit, the health dept wouldn't allow it. But you can still walk part of it which is laid out like a botanical garden. It's strange that even the local stores sell mostly the same type of fruit you can get anywhere in America. You would think they would feature the awesome local stuff.

Fairchild Botanical Gardens in Homestead, FL is another place I'd like to visit.  They are having their annual mango festival in a couple of weeks and I'd love to go to that some time.  I maybe would even go this year if I wasn't already going to be in Nicaragua at the same time.  I'm hoping to hear reports of some figs growing in Nicaragua during this visit.

I would like to visit there too. It's fun finding some unique fruits. Hope you get some tasty ones in Nicaragua. I've spied so many fg trees here in Hawaii. I'm tempted to get cuttings but at some point enough with the cuttings.

I've been told that mango season will be over by the time we get there at the end of next week. :(  I am taking mango scions with me, hopefully, in an effort to change that. :)  Besides going for a mission trip to visit sponsored children for a week we are also spending a few days touring around and have scheduled a visit with a "finca" (large farm) that grows pitaya (dragonfruit) and pineapple.

I know this is an old thread but I just came back from Frankie's nursery on Oahu and that place is pretty spectacular. It was March so only a few of the fruits were ripe. I wanted to take every tree home with me.
