Terraces of Figs- Berlin Potsdam

For those thinking about winter protection, here's a famous example from Germany:

Basically each fig tree has its own small greenhouse and would be cut back each year to over winter then in spring the doors would be opened and the trees allowed to grow .

It'd be interesting to know the varieties.

Dang, now that's a retaining wall!  My wife will roll her eyes when I suggest we do this, but I'll suggest it just the same :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they leave the trees inside those greenhouse the whole year. This is not a winter protection, but a whole year protection.
I've seen that in London for Lemon trees . They have the trees inside a greenhouse the whole year, opening doors and windows to adjust the temps if necessary .
Here, in such a setup, the trees would fry at Summer time.
