Texas Lemon fig??

Anyone have knowledge of this fig or growing this variety?

Found it on this link on the Figs 4 Fun homepage   http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/fruit-nut/files/2010/10/figs.pdf

Also under the Figs 4 Fun Varieties link, Lemon may go by these names just to name a few:

Bianci, Marseilles, Italian Honey, Lattarula, Peter's Honey, White of Argenteuil

'Lemon'

is a fig variety that was found growing on the banks of a levee near Del Rio, Texas. It has an attractive yellow skin with a creamy, smooth flesh and a closed eye. ' Lemon' has a unique flavor with mild citrus notes. It has produced well in Fredericksburg and San Antonio and is suggested for trial plantings on the southern half of the state. 'Lemon' is somewhat cold tender, but produces moderate crops on new growth in years winter freezes kill it to the ground.

I have petes honey. its really good here in zone 6 illinois. i dont get the main crop though it gets to cold before they can ripen up. pm me if you would like to know more.

I have grown "lemon" for a number of years (since '07) I always  thought "lemon" was another Marseilles fig -- of which I have 10 or 12. It has been sold under many names. My mom's family comes from southern Texas and they claim this fig is one of the great figs of Texas. I've also been told it's a PA fig. Sorry that this post won't help but I can tell you it is an outstanding fig that almost explodes with sugar.
The Lemon figs that have been for sale on Ebay for the last couple of years are darn good figs. I have bought 6 of them in the last 3 years.
I have one tree that is supposed to be a "Texas" fig but it is the exact same fig as the others I own.

very good flavor Michael i would have to agree with you there. seems to be a very good producer as well. the one tree i have that is around 6 foor produced about 50 figs on its breba and had even more for the main crop that never ripend up.

it is a greeny yellowie color when ripe and has a amber pulp that is super sweet and rich, very tight closed eye . i have cuttings going of the latarola that i hear is 10 times better i cant wait.

Dave, I think lemon is one of the Marseilles family -- which in my opinion are damn great figs.
I have 6 different figs that fall into that category and my Monticello Marseilles, for example, is an excellent fig -- top 5 last year,

It seems there are just a ton of different names for what are probably just a few varieties of really superior figs.

Thanks for all the great input.  Strange, EL is selling Marseilles and Lattarula so they must beleive they are two completely different varieties.  Welcome to the crazy world of figs I guess.

Daniel and Steve, note that EL also describes their Lattarulla as related to Desert King in that it is a breba-only fig in the absence of pollenation.  (Or at least they say the main i.e. 2nd, crop is inferior which combined with the reference to King suggest that it is a San Pedro type of fig.)  Is this true in your experience?  I've thought about trying this fig but I would like to be able to get a main crop.  Then again, if the breba crop is really good maybe it is still worth it.

Steve,

EL may sell the same fig by different names because buyers know that fig by different names, or because one name is more appealing to some buyers than the other. This is no swipe at EL.

Dale,

I agree and my post was not meant to be a swipe at EL either.  Just pointing out that EL has two kinds for sale.  Best way to tell if they are different is do what a lot of people here have done, buy both and compare.

Thanks Daniel, that's very useful information.

Steve
