Thank You

I wanted to send a thank you and status update to those who were kind enough to send me cuttings my first year growing figs. The majority of cuttings that I acquired were from generous forum members who only charged shipping. One member even sent me my first batch of cuttings free (he asked to remain nameless but I only sourced the ischia green from you and I can always say that's where my love for growing figs started) So thank you Vince, Frank, Gloria, Grasa, Jim, and Phil! Call it beginers luck but I was able to successfully root every variety that was sent my way. So if you sent me cuttings they are alive and well! So well in fact I have began the up-potting and shuffling outside. I have also rooted duplicates and gave those to coworkers, family, friends, and neighbors telling the story of each person who gave the original cuttings, where they live now, and how i acquired them such as the christmas photo contest or in the case of Dominick's fig I actually printed the story, laminated it and gave that as well. Also thank you to folks like Rafed, Pete, and others who always chime in on my new guy questions. I attribute all of my success to those who helped teach me tips and tricks.

I posted a couple pics. The top picture figs still need transitioned outside. The bottom figs are already out but some may need bigger pots! Thanks again!

Great job, Scott! You obviously have the knack.

Strong work!  Be careful getting the plants out of those jars.  Often the roots stick to the sides.  Warm water can loosen them but the neck being narrower than the rest of the jar is not going to work in your favor.  Many people cut the containers open, tape them back together then put the fig in and just open it back up when it's time to up pot.  I'd hate to see you lose all that hard work by breaking the roots.  Best of luck!

Scott
Absolutely fantastic, couldn't be happier for you. Me and Dominick are smiling ear to ear

Thanks Frank!

Bob- I did transfer one from the white containers this evening and did not realize that issue until I turned things upside down and had to carefully work things out. Haha. Lesson learned for sure that the top opening needs to be wider than the rest of the container! I think I may try to cut the next one and see how that works. Fortunately whatever plastic this is made of does not stick to roots like I see with the milk jugs, pop bottles, and cups.

Thank you and Dominick, Coop!

Great Job Scott

Very nice!

Thanks strudeldog,

Your varieties of cuttings kept me very busy through the winter months!

Noss- these containers seem to be a perfect step up from the cups I used. I don't know how to describe the inside but nothing sticks to it. My mom, mother-n-law, and wife all work in the dental field and these hold the wet wipes aka sanitation wipes used for cleaning off counters. They go through a few a week. I agree cutting the top part off will be the way to go! Thanks!

Your cuttings do look good to.  I look forward to hearing which varieties of yours do well here in FtW.  And how you overwinter in the future, outside or inside.  I will be posting my efforts.

FYI  I don't know where you get your potting medium, but I just bought 2 bushels (20 gallons) of pine bark fines from Felgers Peat Moss off Hwy33N for $1.93  It cost more in gas to get there.

Hi figpit,

Nice to see another member from our area. I have no idea what to do with our climate. It is a difficult place at times to grow anything. It was dry and warm for weeks with no rain now it hasn't stopped raining in days and we are dipping into the 30's. 86 to 38 degree shift in mid May! Tons of wind too. I will hit up Felger's at some point before finishing up potting. That is a great price and I have seen other members using that as well. Thanks for sharing and hopefully we can get some figs to eventually ripen!

Another update. Transitioned the final cuttings from cups to larger containers with my big helper! =)

Bob - I started taking the tops off the new white containers before planting so they slide out easier next time!

That is a very cute lil helper:)  You have done well.

Nice Scott,
Your figs look great, and your little girl looks even better.

Well done.  Kudos to your "big" helper.  Hopefully she will soon enjoy the fruits of her labor.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to the time lapse picture next year to see how much she and the figs have grown!

Very nice, Scott.  Keep up the good work!

Hi Hoosierguy86,
The trees are looking good. Well done.
Be careful with your helper, I have the same specie, and they turn into squirrels and eat the figs before you can even take a pic !
Mine is now forbidden to enter the garden !
Last time she saw a ripe fig, all the neighbors got the information ! Why are they so loud ?
