Thank You Akram!!

Today I checked the mail and there were seven cuttings from Akram in Ottawa.
He was true to his word!!
Seven is a lucky number, so there will be figs!!

Again thank you Akram

Akram are you back on?
I heard you had some computer problems?

I received your cutting.
Thank you very much!!

Don't mention it. It is just payback time for me. Other more generous donors helped me start with my collection. I am sure you may do the same later if you made the cuttings root, shoot and survive in your Zone 4. Good luck (more so in getting ripe figs).

I have one of your cuttings shooting out two leaves.
I think it's one of the hardy Chicago, yeah!!

My dad told me the best way to get cuttings to
grow is to lay them down and bury them comepletly.
That way they will root better and eventually
they will shoot out stems and leaves.

He has always done that with grape vines and never had a problem
with any cuttings he received.

Thank you!!

Jerry, good to hear that.
I believe the grape and fig cuttings behaved different for me last year.
I had 42 grape cuttings to root, the first time ever. I used many different ways (some baggie method, some directly in soil, some stored in peat mass until spring). Some rooted but most roted and by mid-spring only one was left standing which is now buried in snow and hope it will survive.
I have much much better success with figs.
I am sure eventually you will find out the best way that help you root successfully. On the way some will cuttings will die to teach you what not to do. However, do make use of others experience to shorten your learning experience time.

The two cuttings I started from my tree I buried comepletly.
They rooted and had green leaves starting.
So I dug them up and left the green up and the roots down, and took off any
roots that were near the green.
That was a big mistake, they both died.
This time I will leave them alone and let them grow until
they are too big for th container and need replanting.
Learn from my mistakes.

Eight cuttings have buds at differant stages.
Two have leaves and the others are doing very well!!

Akram,

Here is a few pics of the only survivor you sent me.
I think you sent me ten cutttings and the one that survives is the mystery fig.
Does it look familier?
Does anyone know what it is?
Is it a white or a black fig?

The mystery will continue until it fruits and some expert identifies the variety.
But the mystery may continue for me longer because I am not sure which unknown it could be from my unknowns.
I am sorry the other cuttings did not make it. We can take care of it in the fall (or spring).

Oh well that's how it goes eh?
Akram I will have some cuttings from my new Kadota I can send you.
It has some branches on it that need to be removed and some that will need to be shortened.
I want to keep only three main branches or a crown as my dad calls it.
It has five now.
