Thank You, Bobby for LSU Scott's Black!

Bobby doesn't post much here, but I sent him some VDB cuttings, and he has these magic ways, and they all grew.  In gratitude, he sent me so many cuttings of LSU Scott's Black, I don't think I can fail.  These are some of the healthiest cuttings I have ever seen.  Green tips, green when cut!!  Not a sign of mold.

Any info on this fig will be great!

I will plant half of the 13+ cuttings in the way of the Greeks.  Outside, horizontal, in a trench with a weak drip system, in partial shade, and well drained soil.  The other half will go into Sphagnum moss.

I'm thrilled with this because I had such trauma with fungus gnats, and cuttings not liking the move.

So give me your LSU Scott's Black stories.  My LSU Gold is reaching for the moon!  And, as Jon said, "If you want a fast tall growing variety, plant Strawberry Verte!  I did, and it's growing a foot a month!  I got mine, actually paid for it, from Driveway Farmer.  It's healthy and shows no signs of FMV.

I only need one LSU Scott's Black, and I am nursing 13 cuttings.  In spring, I might be up for some trades:-))

Good luck! My last round was hit hard by fungus gnats also, I'm gonna have to figure out a plan for this coming spring.

Ryan, the Greeks do know a thing or two.  We live in the same zone 9a.  Figs should thrive as do the fungus gnats.  If you lay the cuttings down in a 1" trench in partial shade, cover them with dirt, and let them get a little water now and then, they won't rot or mold.  They will grow!  Just don't go stupid and put them in pots right away!  Wait until it's hot and the pots can go outside and the figs will grow.  Inside the fungus gnats thrive!!

Good luck Ryan!  Funny thing is, Bobby was one of the first who requested VDB cuttings, and he somehow managed to make them grow!  Maybe he got the best I had.  Cuttings are best taken from this years growth.  Old growth doesn't do as good as that little shoot that just shot up!  Bobby got those from me.

Now what can you tell  me about LSU Scotts black?  Bobby showered me with cuttings!

Suzi, the link below has some info about Scott's Black. We were told at the LSU field day this year that it would be released in the near future by a private company and it may carry a different name when that happens, but it's gonna be up to the new owners.

Thanks for the link Gene!  I am pleased to know it's a BIG tree.  Also pleased to know that the figs are really good.  No flavor profile in that link, but I guess I'll find out.  Our climate here is hot and dry mostly.  We all pretty much hide when it gets humid!!  It will be interesting to see how it does here!

So it's name might change?  How unusual.... :-))

Thanks!

Suzi
