Thanks and did I cheat?

Fig newbie here. Wanted to say thanks for all the information I have learned here. picked up my first fig recently, an atreano as highly recommended by a certain very very helpful member, and after viewing all the cutting, rooting, air layering etc, I feel that I have cheated. I took the easy way out and spent way too much on an older plant. I haven't had it more than a couple of weeks and already have tiny figs! I will probably give rooting a cutting a shot at some point since I wanted hardy Chicago but couldn't find one locally anywhere.
Here is a pic of the whole plant and the figs forming.

Welcome Figinqueens . I daresay we've all bought trees . The older the tree the sooner you get to eat figs ! Definitely not cheating !! Good luck with your tree , it is a great fig.

Welcome to the forum!  My first fig was even purchased as a plant prior to me even knowing about this forum.  Not cheating at all.  I recently bought 6, 3 gallon fig trees, and they all have figlets.  It's nice to have a supply of figs while you do the trial and error "rooting cuttings," drama!

Good luck!

Suzi

Welcome!  A smart way to jump start your fig collection.  It's just that if you're getting 100 figs cuttings are easier to afford and cheaper to ship.  We'd all like to get fully grown trees rather than wait years to taste the fruits of our labor  :)

Welcome!

Welcome to the forum!

; )

Welcome to the forum.  Much to learn here from the best teachers that the world has to offer.  Most of us have ...."been there, done that"... so ask all your questions.  We will be happy to help you out.

While you are watching your bearing-age tree ripen your first crop of "Atreano" figs, you can now, at your leisure, read about all the fig varieties that you will start from cuttings.  "Hardy Chicago" is another winner fig.  Go for it!

Good luck with your fig tree(s).....

Frank

One is where it starts . . .

Welcome!

Not cheating at all.  When I first got the fig bug last year, I bought a Celeste from Durio and a Hunt and Smith from Just Fruits and Exotics.  Then I learned about cuttings and the rest is history........54 trees later.  Welcome!!

Welcome! Dude (or dudette) those are called breba, you still have main crop to look forward to-and no, not cheating at all. Are you in Queens? Tell us more about yourself!

Welcome! I just got started with figs, too. After growing some cuttings into tiny tree, I bought 5 trees, so it's not cheating, it's smart at the start!

Congrats on your little figs!

Aloha and welcome!  I don't think buying a fig tree is cheating, except that you get to taste figs earlier than if you propagated them from cuttings.  I'm with most of the figgies here saying, "why not?"  Happy growing!

Nate

No, not cheating at all. At least your tree won't die on you. With cuttings, you have to have a lot of patience. Welcome to the group.

Norhayati

That's how I started.  First a rooted cutting from a guy at work then 4 or 5 trees from Bill's Figs in NJ.  Now 30 plus rooted cuttings this year

I think you are best off by starting your fig growing by buying a nice older tree. There will be time ahead for rooting and playing, but you can't go wrong with a nice established tree.
You are not cheating!!

Welcome to THE forum , what's your location/Zoning?

Hi,
Buying a tree is the fastest and easiest method to start the addiction. Most of the times, the only serious problem could be the price ...
Sometimes you can find some on sales for a decent price. I bought one this year for 6.5$ - I don't know the strain - just mentionned ficus carica on the label - the photo of fruits looked good perhaps a bit like  BT .
And that's not a problem for me. I'll get it to grow and fruit as soon as feasible.

Of course if you have people around that can share or swap cuttings with you, it is a good way to add different strains to your collection.
Are you planning to grow in pot or in ground ?
Welcome and Happy figging !

Same with me. I didn't want to wait for figs from a Panachee...I wanted them NOW so I bought a tree from HD. Turns out it wasn't a Panachee but the figs were excellent so I didn't return it (Adriatic?). The following year I bought another, making sure it had stripes this time. It's in the ground now for 3 years...yet to get a fig, darn critters. I'm building a cage for it this year like I did for my apple. Looks like I may get apples this year!

Sue what type of Apples are those? I have Anna, Fiji, Dorsette and Cyprus apple, they are like 1-1.5 Lbs each when ripe (huge, tart/sweet, green with a pink stripe blush on the sunny side). I have been experimenting with cross grafting, to get different varieties on one tree.

pleased to meetcha. i'm happy to have purchased trees. i'm getting figs this year from trees i bot in the last two years.

No such thing as cheating in figs! I think we all probably bought at least one tree to get a leg up!

Welcome!

Yup, you're cheating.  As a penalty, I'll be over to confiscate the figs as they ripen.

Just remember, Altreano is a gateway fig - soon you'll be hooked.

Andrew

Thanks all. I was only joking a little about cheating. I am in NYC which is zone 7 and will be growing in a container in my backyard (concrete). I will over winter in an unheated garage.

Aaron, it's an Anna apple.
