thanks for the mulberry cuttings!

just would like to thank very generous forum member for his mulberry cuttings. so project mulberry starts :) i received two kinds. Illinois Everbearing and Pakistan. i believe they are both M. alba.

i have processed them like i do with fig cuttings, and they are in baggies now. we'll see what happens in few weeks.

If you placed them in bags of moist sphagnum moss, they'll root pretty quickly. Mine came out of the bags with little berries forming, as well as roots and leaves. I cut those tiny pseudo-fruits off, of course, but it was still kind of amazing. Mulberries are pretty easy and grow rapidly.

i just noticed that mulberry cuttings have very sweet smell. almost like fruit over ripen type smell. definitely different from the figs.

Pete the Illinois mulberry is hybrid created around 1947 from morus alba and morus rubra i love those figs er mulberries . Tree withstands our Illinois winters with no problems as i can attest.   ; )

Here is nice article on some mulberry's , click link in 3 paragraph also .
Notice what they say about chromosome count of the morus nigra types.

The author of article and some books also has a website about plants link in that article.

Good luck with your cuttings .

This morning I called the dude from Craigslist who I am picking up my macadamia tree from, and we chatted.  Dude has 200 fruit trees!   OMG!  So he asks if I like fruit trees, and he told me his favorite is the Pakistan Mulberry.  It has 5" long fruit here in our ideal climate, and he told me to google it.  I did, liked what I found, and found one on Craigs list for $35.00!  That dude assured me he'll have those 6' tall trees always.  I laughed and said, first we need to buy a truck!  It's true.  Checking craigs list for a used one that still works.  We need a long bed 'beater' for cheap, for all the schlepping we will do at the new property!

I didn't even ask about figs!  I doubt he has anything that I don't have... unless....... he's a member here.  Name is Duncan, and no, he doesn't own that donuts chain!

Never thought about Mulberries prior to this.  Thought they were an east coast thing.

Would love to buy some Pakistan Mulberry cuttings if anyone has them.

Suzi

suzi,

i heard for the drier warm climate, Black Beauty Mulberry (M. nigra) is the best tasting. it's too disease prone in humid southeast. they are going for around $25 i think. i might think about getting one anyway. i heard growthis really slow, but the BB is one of the best tasting.

Hey Pete!  I'll put that on my list also.  Because of Duncan's raves about it being his favorite of all 200 fruit trees (he is in my dry So CA climate), I'm wishing for the Pakistan Mulberry first.  Also, it grows 15' per year, so, that appeals also.   I think UC Davis has cuttings also, and I might try the Black Beauty next year.

From a lot of reading i been doing Black Mulberry, Spanish , Black Beauty,Chelsea, Jerusalem, Kaester, King James the 1st, Persian, Noire of Spain all in family of Morus Nigra have the high chromosome and very similar in taste . The other genus types such as Morus Rubra, Morus Alba do not have that high chromosome count.

There is also name confusion similar to figs i have seen along like ebay where you may see Morus Nigra scion for sale but no cultivar name just the general genus name Morus Nigra and a few nurseries that have not so good ratings according to Dave Wilsons site and you may not get what is advertised.

  ; )

For the Southern California dwellers, the Pakistani is perfect!  National Germoplasm at Davis has it, and I will order for next year.  Read their amazing description!!

New love!

Interesting history , as it came from Pakistan via Dr. White and also Mike McConkey owner of Edible Landscaping to UcDavis originally as Morua Alba type.

On EL site
Though original cuttings from Islamabad were labeled Morus alba, it is generally recognized as Morus macroura. Imported by Dr. White, USDA Plant Introduction Officer for AJ Bullard of Mount Olive NC and Michael McConkey of Edible Landscaping.

Pete,

Hope you have better luck rooting them then I have and thanks for the Fig cutting in return.

Illinois Everbearing mulberry I have read as being Alba, a AlbaXRubra Hybrid. I think the hybrid is correct.  Pakistan is normally categorized as Alba, but I am sure I have read opinions that it is Morus macroura. I surely don’t know the truth, only that I love them.

Despite the warnings Nigra will not do well for me in the southeast I am eager to try one but,Peaceful Valley (GrowOrganic) has really messed up my order. They had all my trees on hold waiting for my Mulberry to come in, then when everything was in they delayed shipping due to weather. Now they are stating they sold one of my Mulberry that was pulled in my order and are out of stock.  I think I am still getting my Black Beauty Nigra, but my bush form Pakistan they lost. Luckily I obtained Pakistan from a NAFEX contact last fall, but it is tree form, that’s what you have cuttings from Pete.  They have pretty poor customer service and acting like they were doing me a favor crediting back for the cost of the tree they lost. They initially were not even going to credit percentage shipping for the tree they are not sending. I just ask them send my order now before you re-sell something else. I have some Pluerry, Plouts, and the Nigra I don’t want to wait a year to get started. They had my whole order waiting for something that will not be in stock until next year!!  They refused just to send that tree next year when back in stock. Very poor service. Sorry about ranting.

Well, whatever the Pakistan version is called, I bought on Ebay from Duncan, a Macadamia, and he is the one who told me that in our part of the world the Pakistan Mulberry is best.  It's his favorite tree.   I'll now see if I can trade him fig cuttings.............

Suzi

OMG!  He hates figs, so I'm stuck!  Have to pay $35 bucks for the tree.  Who on this earth hates figs?  He does!  Wow!  And of his 200 fruit trees a fig isn't in that mess?

Suzi

suzi, check out burnt ridge nursery. i think it's much cheaper than $35. tho.. you'll have to pay shipping :)

bit of an update. the cuttings are not getting mold at all on these guys. it's only been couple of day. the bottom of the cuttings look very promising as far as the roots are concerned. specially the Pakistan. Illinois Everbearing is still thinking about it. there are ton of lenticels on Pakistan and they are pushing. hope some will turn out to be root initials.

so now is a good time to start rooting mulbery (morus alba) cuttings?

i tried last year but in the summer and didnt get them to root but only to leaf.

anyhow this year all my fig cutinsg go on top of the fridge close to the wall and they root in 3 days, so maybe it will work with the mulberry too.

mulberry root better from SOFTWOOD cuttings,
than from hardwood dormant.

never rooted mulberry before. how hard can it be?

i heard they bring bats around. dont know if its good for the figs.
anyhow the pakistani kind is good and big and doesnt drop as quickly.

Depends on the variety,
some are very difficult.

If you get into mulberries,
the Japanese are the undisputed kings of this fruit,
they have hundreds of unique cultivars.
