i'm telling you.. i live in wrong state. i just washed my rooting bin tonight. noticed two of my cuttings has good enough roots to go into the cup and to the bin. i would rather be eating fig then rooting them.

FMD thanks for sharing. I am still trying to ripen a few under some lights but we have had several heavy frost now.

I just ate two from the yard today too. And two yesterday. Today was a JH Adriatic and also a Beall. JHA was better. Very good in fact. Yesterday was a long yellow - only fair, but it had just rained. It was a very pretty fig however - yellow with a touch of pink. I also happened upon a ripe Strawberry Verte and it was very pleasing fig. Oh, I also ate a small VDB today too. There are still many more on the young trees, but I'm not sure how many of them will ripen - December is only 10 days away. These have been rather good. I can only imagine how much better they will be when the days are longer and it's warmer.

Happy Thanksgiving indeed. :)

Pete ... I agree...I live in the wrong State, also.  Too short a season...I need more!

FMD...Those figs...what can I say?

After my family obligations come to and end, I just may decide to relocate to Central Florida, at the invitation of some friends.  The prospect of this contemplated "move" went from "forget it" ...to, "very possible....let me think about it"  The freezing cold and endless shoveling of snow is not something I want to endure.  The longer growing season, and sub-tropical climate appeals to my gardening needs, yearnings, desires...

I have a lot to consider.

Frank

I am in the wrong country. Perhaps FMD should set up shop selling fig roll-ups. At least it is the closest to the real thing.

FMD - I can't seem to decide either!!!  I was raised in NY and didn't have figs until mid-late Aug.  After living in Texas for 20 years, I planted a fig tree!!  Oh what JOY I have gotten from my humble little tree.  I had no idea how STARVED I was for a fig tree!!  I had a breba in MAY!!!  Can you believe that??  May!!  I picked my first main crop in JUNE!!!!  And had more through July 20.  I started picking more on Nov 8!!!  I was out there today and there still might be another one or two that will ripen!  Granted they aren't as sweet as the summer figs - but FIGS IN NOVEMBER!!!!  WOO-HOO!!  Of course it helps with the temps being in the high 70s - low 80s ;)

Frank,

If I were there I would have decided for you. But it would have taken all the figs available to decide.
You know me, I want to give an unbias opinion. All the figs would have had a fair shot.

Nice pictures btw

Happy Turkey Day everyone.
I am pleased with the results considering that in April every tree had died to the ground from a late freak freeze. The orchard was started on Labor Day of 2011.
If we luck out and a freak late freeze does not repeat this Spring, the orchard should be much more productive next year.
BTW, the pictured figs are VDB, LSU Gold, Atreano, Beall, Sicilian Red and Alma.

Rafed, you are always welcome to sample the wares.

Thanks Frank for the invite.
If you ever make it to Michigan during the Winter months I will take you ice fishing.

Frank,

Two years ago I would have never imagined myself here in the Houston area.  I moved here in May this year and am really enjoying the temperate climate and can't believe I didn't move here sooner.  While family and friends are raking leaves or maybe even dealing with snow I planted a fig tree a few weeks back.  Do what your heart tells you, but I think if you move to central Florida you will be asking yourself why you didn't do it earlier.

Frank, I am a fellow New Yorker who moved to TX 20 years ago!!!  The recession in the early 90's was a big part of it, but also the cold and cost of houses on LI!!!  In my field I couldn't see how I would possibly be able to buy a house.  We Do get some snow here in the DFW area, but it last a day or 2 (aside from the freak snow storm for Super Bowl 2011!!)   Culture shock?  Yes!  If you have friends or family where you are moving to it will be a quicker adjustment.

By the way, I picked a fig today!!   The leaves are turning yellow and it is going into the low 30's tonight, 50's tomorrow and 70's on Sun and Mon.  Maybe I'll pick 2-3 more.
