The beauty of figs leafing out

I joined this forum a year ago today, and as I sit here looking out the window, I see some of my fig trees started this past year are beginning to leaf out. It's a sunny, warm day here - mid 70s already. The trees in pots against the south side of the house already have leaves 6 inches in size. So bright green and soft-looking in the light breeze. Truly beautiful.

A year ago, I had not yet even begun to start any cuttings at all. And now, a year later, I have lots of plants, many already in 5 gallons, but even more in gallons and more just rooted and waiting to be moved up. Last year I was able to taste a number of them, and this year I hope to try many, many more.

I do not know how many varieties I have collected, nor how many plants I have. I'm almost afraid to know, lol. I have purchased, traded, and been generously given many different kinds of figs. I'm very pleased with what I have and at this time, have nothing on my wish list. Got to save something for next year.:)

I've been involved with plants one way or another my whole life, but this year has been one of the most fun. The Agony and the Ecstacy would have been a good title, if it had not been already taken.

Thanks to all - past and present - who have shared both their questions, their knowledge - and their plant material. Who knew figs could be so much fun!

All the very best to you Gina

They are beautiful.  I have zone envy and want pictures  :)

Always exciting to see them wake up and 70 degree's wow send some of that warmth our way !

That was absolutely beautiful!
**wiping a tear from my eye**

It's 28 degrees here,
and we're up to our ankles in wet snow!
I so envy you! :)

Great post, Gina.  I know we all share some of those feelings.

Gina...

So nice to read that you had such a rewarding experience with your efforts growing figs.  May it continue.

I am not a very patient man.  I will wait, if I have to wait, but there better be a pay off.  Figs have never failed my limited attention span.  I would never consider growing other fruit trees that take years to produce, then give me inferior harvests, like peaches, apples, etc.  Too many bugs, smuts, bacterial rots, blossom-end this, and thats.  Figs...no problems, and they grow fruit on current year's wood.  How can it get any better?

Spring is springing....and the eternal renewal has started in many parts.  Have a great season.  Plant a fig in someone's honor, for a new child, for a loved one who has past on ...spread the joy.

Frank

Still snow expected on the east coast here next week, but I can surely smell spring in the air on those warm sunny days, great post, cheers
