Very nice George! And Dave! Thanks for sharing. They look like the figs I ate growing up in Greece and probably Vasilika Melissi. Back then the name was not very significant . This is the main comercial variety. Every summer( med to late August ) a farmer named "Κυρ Σωτήρης" or Mr Sotiris in English , would pass by our house ,usually every two or three days,on a horse and carriage selling his seasonal produce. Tomatoes , zucchini , peppers, vlita(a kind of greens much like kale) soultania grapes( yellow seedless, very sweet) and of course Figs. He always made sure to put a paper bag with a couple of kilos aside for me since he always ended up selling Them out. Later on in the years he replaced the horse with a tractor but the figs always tasted awesome. One time we visited at his farm and picked our own fruit and veggies and I remember one thing that moved my curiosity . I saw rings made of fishing line and dry looking green figs hanging on the fig trees. After I asked, I got the whole story about Capri figs and that wasp( ψινας) as it is called in Greek and polination . That being said ,does not mean that Melissi needs polination to produce. They pollinate them in order to get better and biger fruit for comercial use. Well, since then things have changed and Mr Sotiris has past,as I found out from my Mom, but awesome childhood memories like those live on and now that I grow figs myself have come back to make a whole lot of sense!
Sorry for hijacking your thread George! Sometimes things just come out and need to be said to a friend,or a few! Thanks for your time!
