I thought I'd post a quick update on my Black Mission Fig Tree. It was one of my first two figs trees I purchased in 2012 when it was already about a year old and about 5' tall. Here's a pic from one of my first F4F posts back in February of 2013 after it had been recently topped:
Even after that topping, the growth of the side branching was very slow and I was getting pretty frustrated that in spite of being one of my oldest fig trees, and a good 3+ years old, it hadn't put out any fruit yet.
I had even commented that if it didn't start fruiting soon, it would be the first variety I would have actually "culled" entirely from the collection.
A couple of months ago, I chopped another two feet off of the top of the tree, pulled it out of its pot and "re-freshed" the soil mix and re-planted.
It immediately started putting out side shoots at the lower part of the tree (the existing branches still haven't grown much) and on the new growth, finally put out a fig.
It looked perfectly ripe today, so, after many years of waiting, I finally got to try my first home-grown black mission:

When I took my first bite of the Black Mission, my first thought was, "well, it's pretty good, but nothing special". But, it was the after-taste that really "hooked" me. The only way I can describe it is somewhat like a caramel after-taste that make this a very nice fig.
I won't give it a 1-10 rating since I haven't tried enough varieties to give a fair/accurate score, but I will say I'm glad I kept it!
