The effect of pinching,on Marseilles vs Black

The pinching effect can be seen in this pix:
The incipient bud growing from old wood, was ,at bottom, where red ribbon is.
Next the branch grew 5 fruits, till the yellow, ribbon, wich is:
The point of second pinching,
Then the fig grew 2 laterall branches,+ the main branch growing up.
All three were pinched again at the point where the Blue ribbon is.
Total number of fruits counted on all new branches grown from this one incipient bud:
=27 fruits.
 !!!!Notice,the ripe fig,position.
It is rite under the point of my first initial pinching!!!!!!
Lower from the ripe one is the next fig ready to get ripe soon.
This is a fact, and it is proof, that the pinching forced this fruit to ripe so early.
It is July 30,and Bingo:ripe fruits start churning, one by one.
This is the first ,but there are similar ones coming on all basic branches ,(about 20),that the fig started in the Spring, and that I was doing the first pinching, arround May 25.
Not even 70 days and they are getting ripe allready.
It is true this Sommer is hot and sunny, but,I have no doubt the pinching get the fruits to ripe 2 weeks earlyer, than without pinching.
And if I would have eliminated the 2 side branches from the start,it could have been even earlyer.
In fact with elimination,of side branches, and fruits, one can get ripe fruits up to the coldest climates, like Juneau Alaska.
On the other hand not pinching and leaving all side Branches and all fruits, one will get them ripe only in southern Florida, and Central Ca.
Note:This tree is a 7 yrs old inground Fig

Herman, the pictures did not load. I had the same trouble if I went back & edited my post, my pictures disappeared.

I can't wait because it is worth a thousand words...

In addition to Herman, Martin (and others who grow in pots as trees),

Do you pinch? I am 95% sure I get it but it would sure be nice to see a couple of pictures to illustrate it...and for confidence.

JD

Yes Thanks I fixed that!
If you grow in pot,it is more important to pinch, tips, side shoots, and remove some fruits, because the plant have only limited resources to live, and if not enough will produce fruits, but inferior ones.

Thanks Herman.

For example, here is my Foxcroft which is about 5ft tall and no signs of fruit and thus is an excellent candidate for pinching. I am growing it in a pot as a tree. It has three branches.

This branch has six leaves. Thus following your advice, PINCH the tip.

This branch has eight (8) leaves. PINCH the tip.

If I do not pinch the tips, then I add about three weeks of SOS. If I pinch, then it is likely that I would see an explosion of figlets.

Correct?

Now to the yellowing. I am hoping that is an over watering issue because while on vacation, I connected an automatic watering system that watered more frequently and thoroughly than I might manually. Any other thoughts?

Hi Herman.

Thanks for the great picture and information.  Your research on figs is most helpful to us all.

I have been pinching back the growth tips on our figs this season with great results, more fruit, bigger fruit, and quicker ripening.

The Marseilles Blacks we got from you are doing great.  We had very high success rates with the cuttings you sent, and the plants from this Springs cuttings are already up to 3 feet tall.  I started pinching these back too though to encourage bushier plants and encourage hardening of the new wood to better withstand the coming cold weather.

Thank you again Herman, your efforts are greatly appreciated, and I always enjoy reading your posts.

Best wishes.

You welcome John, and you did right.
To JD:Yes by all means pinch them.
Also remove leaves that are inside canopy, and low ,close to ground, to diminish fungal deasese.
In Florida the season is long, and pinched now new emerging fruits still have time to get ripe.
But for me and north for here pinching at this time does not help, because will form late fruits that will never ripe.
