The end is near :(

My first season with my first tree - the figs are almost gone!!  5 left, had 21.  They have been so delicious.  I picked one today that was "dead ripe" and did not find the flavor much different then the others.

Don't worry, I ahve not been a greed fig miser - I have shared.  Now that I have time to reflect on my generosity I have regrets!!

What was I thinking!!!

I shared with 2 friends separately and BOTH of them LOVED it!!  What did I do!!

I brought one to work and cut it into several pieces for a few to try - they all loved it!!  2 of them never had a fresh fig before!!  And I work in a high end private hotel kitchen, one of them was a chef and the other a pastry cook.

That's it the rest are for me and my man!

Congrats on a successful and tasty first summer with your own figs...sounds like you are hooked!

That's pretty commendable of you to share your first figs with friends and co- workers. A little painful I see, but that is certainly understandable. You get an ata girl for that.

Hooked?  I've been hooked as far back as I could remember!!  It never occurred to me to have a tree in a pot (and I used to grow bonsai - go figure lol)

I forgot! Today I also GAVE one to the man at the nursery I shop in.  They had re-potting day, bring in your plants and re-pot them for free, they supply the tables and the soil.

Anyway, he gave me a few cuttings from his tree somewhere in E. Texas.  He only gets there on weekends and he was complaining about the birds eating his figs.  I brought a few orchids in for him to look at and brought a fig also.  He said "Oh my GOD!! (eyes popped too!)  This is the BEST fig I have ever had!!  You bought it here!!??"  He was very thankful, and I enjoyed him enjoying the fig!

I'll start a new thread for pictures of a few of the remaining figs :(  soo sad....

It never fails to amaze me when you give a fresh fig to someone who has never had one. The look on their face. Then the discussion that begins. I share with my fellow coworkers just to see and here their response. I am truly surprised by the number of them who have not tasted a fresh fig. Jo Ann have you started any figs which will ripen later or earlier for you, in order to extend your ripening season? Anyway, there will be next year to look forward to.

Noss, the breba was OK, the main crop - WOW!!!!!  I had 21 figs from the tree with 3 left.  I have posted pictures of the main crop fruit for an ID but there was only 2-3 responses.  There wasn't much  interest in the thread so I figure I'll let it go for a while.

Charles, I know most people think of fig newtons - I tell them that is like saying I've had raisins and they are grapes!  Nothing like it.

As for expanding the ripening season - oh yeah that is the plan.I have received cuttings from a couple of generous members, the family tree from my mom in NY, and the man from the nursery - unknown variety.  I don't know what the ripening times are - but I will find out!

I would still like to get mine with a correct ID so I could send cuttings with a name on it

Hopefully a few of those fig "seeds" you planted will bear fruit and in the future they'll share their ripe figs with you.  :)  Sorry no one identified your fig.  The thread was interesting but I can't help you and didn't have anything amusing to say so I didn't post.  Most others probably felt the same.
