The fig shuffle starts again w/pics

It went from summer weather to the cold and frost tonight. I didn't want to risk losing any trees or setting them back. I worked all day and then straight to my kids baseball game and had to come home and bring in all the pots and cover my in ground tree. I also included a couple of not ripe enough breba pics. I should of waited to pick them but we were about to have a nasty rain storm. They are Atreano and my Unknown Chiappetta/Calabria. The Chiappetta was 10x better than the Atreano.

Yeah Art, I just finished myself. I'm just far enough south that we are only under a frost warning, so I just covered everything. I'm hoping my brebas make it.

They all look great Art ! What a job!  This weather is making me crazy ! Low 40's tomorrow night and Sun night, mid 40's tonight with rain- ugh !

Yeah Art similar here last night but in high 30s for low and brought in the small guys and plus my Madeira.
Tonight low 40 brought same ones back in.

Art, looks like you had quite a job on your hands. Glad you got them all taken care of. It's about time for this silly weather to settle in.

Aaron,
I think we will be in the clear Sunday.

Martin,
My weather is always a day or two behind yours.

Just got home and had to finish covering the in ground trees. Earlier I moved all the potted trees back into the garage for hopefully THE LAST TIME!

If our southern neighbors would be so kind to turn your fans on and blow some heat up north that would be greatly appreciated.

Geeze , I just came in after I wrapped tower of my growing cuttings in a row cover. Thank goodness its frost weight and 5' wide by 50' long so I could wrap and clip it closed. Junior trees were wrapped together also. Older trees are on their own, but not supposed to be freezing, but lower than expected.

Tony,
I bet you will sleep good tonight. I know how many pots you have.

Guys, if that happened to me at the end of May I'd move.  That's crazy!

Only supposed to get down to 38F or 39F here tonight... I decided to risk it.  I left them out.  It's too late at night for me to be moving them inside again, not to mention too late in the year.

Mike   central NY state, zone 5

It's 34 out here now and everything stayed outside. Looking at them now from the inside they seem not to be effected by this short term temp drop.
Hopefully all's well. Just too tired of taking them in and out.

it's almost at the end of may, and 41 right now. don't know what's going on with this weather.

Sorry about the weather and having to move all your plants.  But at least you have some really nice plants and hey it gives you the chance to handle them and give a good close inspection of all.

goss

Seriously?  MAY -25th  ...and, it's still freezing!  GLOBAL WARMING?????   I'd like to plant a few of my largest trees right up Al Gore's  _ _ _ !!!!  What a scam!  The Madoff fiasco was chump-change compared to what this self-righteous BS artist, rakes in.

A few days ago I was sweating in the almost 90 degree weather.  Now it's 40 degrees cooler.  My trees are stunned, and still, partially comatose.  They grow, they stop, they grow, the leaves fall off....

At this point, I'll be happy if I get any figs this year!

Excuse me while I get another cup of hot coffee to warm up.

Frank....Florida is looking better, and better everyday.

Art,
Hope you don't have to move trees anymore after this. Glad to see the picture of the Chiappetta fig. Please post more of them when they ripen more fruit. I got some cuttings of this variety through slingha last fall and all three are growing well. They wanted to produce breba's for me but I pinched them off.

Would like to see more pics of the Chiapetta/Calabris fig also. Anxious to hear your description of its taste . Can't wait until mine is old enough for good fruit .

Womack and Pattee,
I don't think I ever seen Breba on the parent tree, because it was never protected. It gets pretty cold here in Western Pa. They for sure get darker on the main crop. Here are a couple of pics from late last year. Keep in mind they get even darker depending on the summer.

Light frost here this morning, only the in ground Dalmatie got hit, on the higher side the other side is fine, covered smaller in ground figs and only part of one leave got burned because the cover was touching.  Should be ok tonight.

No frost but temps in the 40s last night. This is far too late in spring for cold weather. Next Saturday's forecast is for 90 degrees. Crazy

When i kept switching the programmable recently from AC to Heat it gave me a message on the display - make up your mind.
All in fun.

I brought all the second year figs in not because of the cold more to keep them from drowning.  I'm forgetting what the sun looks like.

Art, I feel your pain. Thanks for the pictures. My figs are in also, do not want to lose any thing.

This should be our last night of frost. The rest of the week will be warming up each night.

All looked well yesterday. It went up to around 67f.
Dropped down to 36 overnight again so I assume all's well again. Will go up to upper 60's today and expected to drop down to 40f tonight.

In my opinion,,,, all this fluctuation is nothing but paradise for FMV at best. Or at worst for that matter.
