The Fruit Hunters

This weekend I watched an exceptional documentary on Rare fruit hunters. The documentary is called “The Fruit Hunters”. It did an amazing job capturing the love, passion and dedication we feel about our fruits. It was sprinkled with history, famous agriculturist, and useful information. Covered everything from bananas, to figs, to mango's, many fruits I had never heard off. I recommend checking it out on netflix.

Cool.. I've started watching it..

Yes good stuff link for the other version on youtube for folks without netflix the  2 versions are different enough both worth watching

Excellent full length documentary!! I'm only about halfway through it but I felt like I was in a fruit nut's group therapy. It's great to see so many people who are so passionate about fruit and fruit growing -just like us :-) !

I was very surprised to see someone I know in the documentary. No, not the actor fella. Early on in the show there was some footage about the International Fruit Growers Meet in Homestead, FL. At one of the fruit tasting tables there was this one skinny fellow with white hair. His name is David Burd. He was practically my neighbor when I lived in Naples, FL. I've bought fruit trees from him and even had the privilege of touring his back yard tropical fruit wonder land. Very cool stuff!

It's amazing the variety of tropical fruit that can be grown in S. FL. That's the #1 thing I miss about living there. Still not enough to outweigh the things I hated about living there though.

Anyway, I love this documentary. It's just the kind of program I'm sure I could watch several times over. I can't say that about more than a handful of things I've ever watched. Looking forward to watching the rest of it.

If you like fruit in the least, I highly recommend it.

Thanks for starting this thread Frank. It may have been a long time before I saw this otherwise.

Thank you for posting that, I really enjoyed it.

@ Bill what did you hate about Florida?

Your welcome. I have never seen anything similar. Can any one reccomend any other good agriculture documentaries?

Yes thanks for the link, I think I will become a mango junkie now!

There are cottage (dwarf) Mangoes that I'm hoping can winter indoors.  I'm planning on ordering one this Spring.

I had no idea there were over 600 mango varieties!!! Thats just crazy, I would like to know if they ever got that white mango graft to take. That seemed like the holy grale of mangos! We can grow them in Htown but it will take some freeze protection from time to time. Im thinking pots or in ground and kept prunned small so it can be protected. I recently added a new fruit to my collection, Sweetheart Lychee. Im very excited about it and cant wait to taste one! Ive never had it before but have read great things about it;)

Someone needs to start the MangosForFun forum!

blueboy, I absolutely LOVE Lychee's!  There was a Chinese restaurant in another life that served them on crushed ice.  Icy Lychee.  OMG!

We are in the same zone as you, so now there is another tree on my list.  If you can grow mangos and lychee's, so can we!  Yay!!

Struddeldog, I loved the first video.  I will watch the other another day.  Thanks for posting them.

Hmmm, I felt like I was watching a fruit screensaver at times. I would have liked more info on the fruit and the projects the various people were working on. Overall, fun to watch once.
