The hardy Chicago skin color

Hardy Chicago normally has a purple/brown flesh in most years in my garden. Last summer the tree that was planted in full sun in a spot that doesn't get watered had the darkest flesh.
I have seen Hardy Chicago that has that same color, Martin's tree produces that color I believe.  So here's how mine looked last summer. Does yours do that, or keeps it's purple flesh?

Bass my hardy chicago gets a real deep plum color most of the time so dark you think its trying to turn black. When I get to my pc I will post a pic.

Mine are that color. Trees are in full sun.

Oh man... even if figs tasted like $%#&, I'd want to grow them just for their looks.

But thankfully they taste great..  Win-win.

My hardy chicago has a wonderful taste i got it from hirts garden off ebay a few years back. it is not in full sun however and hirts said that it was a fig that didnot require 100% full sun thats why i chose it for this location. it does ger full sun in the morning and a little after noon until the sun moves behind the tall trees in the niehbors yard. i posted three pics so you can in fact see it in the shade and sun. i hope you enjoy.

if i may ask how old is your HC my little guy is going on its third year. it has grown alot from the tiped bud stick it was when i first got it but not as fast as i would have liked. maybe i should firtilize with more than compost. thinking of adding bone and blood meal to thier feeding. i got about 20 figs from my little tree. i did prune for the first time this year in hopes of rooting a few more for a hedge but i out of all the cuttings i have rooted (hundreds) i just cant get a HC to root to save my life.

oh yeah im 35 miles from st.louis. black loam for soil. i still add compost when i plant a new tree or plot.

Hey Bass

I believe that some of my Hardy Chicago figs that slowly ripened later in the year (last year) appeared to be more dark in color like yours. Here's one picture of a nice ripe one right before i picked it. I'll see if I can find one thats more purple/reddish and post as well.

BTW, Bass your figs look great!

Daniel, my Hardy Chicago figs look the same as yours, identical!

when do yours ripen i get min maybe late july and aug here in zone 6

Hey Dave,

A quick look back at my garden notes and I have this recorded for last year:

8/5 - Two ripe Cold Hardy Chicago Figs
8/21 - About 10 CH figs picked, with several more ready
8/21 - Started air-layer on HC fig, 1 stick miracle gro fertilizer added
8/26 - Started 2nd air-layer on HC fig, no m/g ; milk bottle
8/26 - o/a 15 figs picked over last two days

so, early August here in east central Maryland, Z7A.

I only get one crop from mine, it dont even try for another. figs start forming in march and ripen up in late july and aug. no formation of any others. i would like to find a fig that ripens early in zone 6b

Yes Bass without the sun they do not seem to get the bloom on them which makes for pretty color.
These cultivar i have many pictures as its 1 of my eldest and 1 of my favorites to eat.
Here is 2 breba i had missed as i always knock off any breba unless im curious.

1  Breba from 2009 right where old wood meets current season wood and bloom can be seen on half the fig and 1 from 2010
