THE HOTTEST FIG ON EBAY FOR A FEW WEEKS

Looks like the galicia nero is stepping into place
of the Italian 258. Funny to set back and watch.
Dont get me wrong i have to have it !!!

I will have that fig in 4 or 5 years when the price comes down.

Guys, remember, there are dark figs and light figs (and a few in between). If you have one of each, you do not have to have them all, they will taste the same at the end (assuming the birds and squirrels do not get them first! ).  The names were just invented for a better marketing!!
:D

Congratulations to Churl.
This type of fig fever I truly don't understand

Did it sell on e-bay for a big price?  If so, how much?

350.00. To me it looked like thin stick in a pot. Go to sold and check it out

I'm watching bass' galicia negra thatll be ending soon (just to see the price).

Seriously, who wouldn't want this?At least you know it will
come true.

And that's for 2 cuttings!  Wow, some people really must want that fig!

Personally I am happy with the ones that used to be hot, and are now a bargain.

@greenfig: I have to disagree. Some figs really have a taste of their own. So keep hunting .
The only limit, is climate limits . But you just can move to a better zone :) ... In theory at least ...

When I see prices for some paintings, well , 350 for a fig tree is not that crazy in the end .
It is all in fun ; so those guys keep it real fun !
Ho man, it is snowing right now here ... Patience, patience, yes fig tree culture does really teach you patience ...

The price will always come down. The first round of buyers will be sellers next year at a third of the price they paid or less. This will continue until the cuttings are less than $10 each.

I've been following that ebay bidding last night as well. Very interesting to see. At least it wasn't over $400 like last year.

It is interesting how our competitive nature can influence us to do things we normally would not.  You end up paying $100.00 for a cutting that if you asked the forum members, you most likely could get it for $20.00 or less and know you are actually getting the desired cultivar.  Value is what someone is willing to pay, if no one was bidding on the auctions, then the cuttings would have no value.  I will never have the newest hottest thing personally, not only because I pay no attention and don't know what the hottest thing is, but mostly because I could care less what the Jones' do and I don't try to keep up them.

Cogardener. You are 100% correct allready have a trade lined up for spring. Trading a air layer for air layer.

Nice Richard!!

Way to go on your trade.  Now you are spending money only on freight, and still got what you wanted.  Also benefited the person you are trading with... win-win!!

Thats it i get my fig want satisfied and make someone else happy. I love trading. Its always exciting when mail man comes. Dis appointing when nothing comes. Lol

Wow, I paid $20 for 2 great pretos from a very reliable source and the Mrs went Postal ,at $250 I d be looking to relocate ! My hot fig for this year is an Olympian airlayer gifted by an awesome friend and my precious pretos of course!

If I bought a Stick Fig Tree for $350....A Ground Hog would eat it up the next day or if they were cuttings for $250, they would rot, while I was trying to root them! :(

greenfig, spoken like a true novice which surprises me given the number of posts you've made There are serious differences in taste among figs, but to be fair there are plenty that are similar, that's another good reason to be sure of varietal names

Ha! Somebody is reading the posts starting from the top ! :)

Thank you for your feedback. My remark may sound like it is coming from a noob but it also has a reflection of my 2+ short years of experience figging in California. You see, all the figs I grow are pollinated and maybe because of this, the dark figs are much closer in taste to each other, as well as the light ones.  How many different flavors can you ID among the dark figs at you place? I probably can do at most 5, with lights, maybe 5 more if I stretch . So, 10 flavors = 10 figs. Everything else can be approximated by those 10 assuming equal conditions and a good weather.
My conclusion above is based on sampling about 100 different varieties at home and the Fig Fiesta gatherings, some are not very common. This doesn’t sound as too many, but they represent a wide range of flavors.
Could you prove me wrong? Of coarse, what I say might be a bit exaggerated but not by much.

dark portugese, kathleen's black, cucumber, aubiqua petite, black ischia, vdb, bisiri dark, vasilika sika, rdb,gm7, Marseilles vs all taste different to me and that's just to start

Part of it is taste is subjective.  While Greenfig might not be able to taste the difference others like Barry would be able to.  It is like a good bottle of wine where the label says hints of black cherry and mint.......I have yet to taste any of that.  BUT I can tell the figs in the yard apart and there is not just taste there is also consistency, seed crunch, texture of the skin.  A lot of variables.

Greenfig I believe is trying to say relax , they are just figs .
I tend to agree . It seems like the noobs are getting caught up in the hype and getting taken for a ride .
They will look back one day and realize it , but for now they somehow believe paying hundreds of dollars for twigs is reasonable .
And Galicia Negra , why because of its pretty colours ? Please .

John

Just be patient and you will get what you want at a reasonable price. Those that buy at such high prices will sooner or later have them available at Walmart everyday low prices. You can't blame the sellers for accepting what they can get, it's the buyers that set the purchase price. There are members on the Forum that will not sell directly to other members but only to the highest bidder on eBay, I still haven't formed an opinion on this practice but it's there property to do with what they want, none of my business.

You know it's all about what you are willing to pay.  I paid $50 for a couple of cuttings this year but I really wanted them and didn't want to wait any longer.  Also I wanted them from the original sources because I didn't trust a lot of the sellers on ebay.
