The Little Fig Ranch

I am rearranging my little fig ranch and have just brought last years babies out from under the oaks. They are the lined up 2 deep on the tarps.
I don't know if this is what you had in mind for the tags Rafed but I love it!DSC01979 (1024x914).jpg

Love how you put that pergola between two pine tree stumps!

Dang, Tami! Looking good, and busy.

What do you have growing up the poles under the pergola? I like the use of the tree stumps.

Wow! That looks serious ! :)
You are going to have a lot of figs to eat this year.
Congratulations!

So neat and organized!  Too bad once the leaves come out you're going to have to separate them.   :)

Wow Tami. Really really well done. And they all look so so happy too.

Very organized,nice job

Thank you guys, so much. The pergola is for the passion fruit. It gets really pretty when it bushes out.

I know I will have to put a few more rows in for figs but at the moment most of the babies are one stump wonders. My Sultanes especially, I cut the top hoping for branches and it grows another 1 branch straight up from the edge of the cut.

I am really having fun with these!

If you would, please explain the pot with the 2 huge stalks in it.

Nothing like a figster, but in Tami's case a figsteress taking pride in what she does.
Everything in order. Nice and neat.

Looking good Tami.

Those huge stocks are PVC pipe covered in burlap to support the Dragon Fruit that died LOL. More is coming and hopefully I won't get caught by the cold with my dragons out again.

Is that what you meant with the tags and zip ties Rafed?

You might want to rename your "little fig ranch" to "Big Fig Ranch".

Nice work. It shows that you take of your trees.

This is really special!  Something we could never do here on rocky top mountain!

Suzi

Looks great, Tami.  Will you be planting any of those in the ground?

Tami-

I'm impressed.  Neat, clean, efficient, all labeled,  same size, same color containers, good location, easy to care for.....and easy to pick when figs get ripe.

Really.....nice set-up.  Have a good harvest.

Frank

Thank you for the wonderful comments. The only benefits to living somewhere with no hills is the pots being able to go anywhere and you use less gas!

My fondest wish is to put trees in the ground but the 1 I have in ground isn't doing great. It pretty much stopped growing after being put in and last year dropped every fig, breba and main!

Our soil is sandy loam and I have tried adding ammendments up to a foot deep to come back the next year and find it all swallowed up by the loam. This was done in front of the house in a flower bed that is 5 feet deep and runs the length of the house. Had truckload of compost brought in, dug down the loam and relocated the top foot of it, backfilled with compost and planted. The next spring I start digging and find loam!

It's almost like the stuff turns into quicksand when it's wet. Any experience in fixing something like this would be very much appreciated. As you can see, the 7 in back in the 25 gallon containers would really enjoy being set free in the ground.

Thank you Frank, you've uncovered my mental illness, I'm a bit like Felix Unger! LOL

Tami,
Thanks for sharing the pictures.
Looks like you're off to a great season.

Raised beds (at least 12" high) should work for your in-ground trees, they are recommended in Japanase Fig Culture and specifically for use in sandy soils with Root Knot Nematodes.

Looks great , and gives me encouragement to get a bit more organized in how my pots are set out(once the snow and cold are gone).

When I lived in Florida we had sand that also burned up organic matter very quickly and we had root knot nematodes to boot.
Hope you can find a way to get some in the ground , I know Just Fruits and Exotics Nursery has some info on soil prep for sandy soils.

Tami,

Those zip ties will do, as in any. But the pink or yellow will stand out in the crowd.
Just remember it is much cheaper to put two tags on your prized, rare and expensive figs than it is to just put one.

Always have that insurance plan in case one falls or breaks off. I like the idea of having one on the pot and one attached to the tree.

Yellow gives the girls a sallow complection. The pink I found were salmon pink not true pink. Can't do salmon pink, will anger the color gods.

Do you have a source for true neon pink?

There are online source but you have to buy like a million of them (exaggerating).

I will post some ideas with links here later but they don't come cheap.

WOW...even the $3.50 for a bag has a $15 shipping attached.

Tami,
How are the rows oriented, South to North or East to West? Or mixed?

They go in all directions. I don't look at direction I look at how much sun they will get daily and at what time. They're spread over 1/2 acre so lots of spots to choose from :)

I have my VdB, Petite Negri and LSU Purple on the "back" side from the afternoon sun since they are all sun drama queens. They will get some shade from the ones up front.
