I am sick of the polar vortex! I am sick of the fig shuffle! And I am sick of this winter! Can we please have some global warming or spring-like weather? Arghhh.

How about a high efficiency wood stove to take the chill out of the air.  Works for me.

What is this "winter" you speak of? I haven't seen daytime temps below 65 since November. Feel free to bring your figs out here where they can bask in the warm sunlight. (You can mock us later this year when the whole state of California is on fire.)

Ah Buttercream I dream of Cal...one day I will take all of my figs and load them on a truck and head west. Until then, it's a dog's life out east.

Yep...January in New York, New York...it's a wonderful town. 

Not a good winter, so far, for the NYC fig trees, and it ain't over yet.  Today/tomorrow.....10-18" of snow, with frigid winds.

My understanding was that the cold of the last two years was wrapped up in the low sunspot cycle mostly, but of courss, I am NOT in favor of damaging the planet climactically-it was just a plea for the cold to let up!

i don't care what they call it. i just want my spring and summer to be nicely hot and sunny.

Oh no don't talk about the low sunspot cycle.  If this continues I am moving to near the equator. 

The last time sun activity was this low was during Europe's mini-ice age of the 17th century.

On the good side - snow makes a very good heat-insulator for the coming windy
cold snap for any uncovered fig trees - at least for them roots and stump.
But a lack of it (snow), also cold-kills bad-insects like deer ticks that cause lyme disease. 

Here it has been both warm and cold.  Nights are colder than normal and days are warmer than normal.  We've had about 35-40 days of frost this year which is much more than normal but many of the afternoons have been t-shirt weather (and I like it warm so I don't wear t-shirts when it's below 70).  Water supply issues are serious here in California.  One good thing about our lack of cloudy weather is that our new solar system has generated much more electricity than it normally would at this time of year.

IMO;

Leave the academic debates on climate change for the academics instead focus on reducing pollution. 
This would save lives and CO2 emissions would also be reduced resulting in less ozone issues.

What winter & vortex when retired staying home and figs are fast asleep!
It is just a little bit on the unpleasant side of the winter sometimes to people but make the figs in the garage go into deeper sleep until mid-April.

To be honest, in year of fig drama -2012-, January was mild, and night temps in February went down to -25°C for a week.
2014, ... - I still haven't seen a little snow layer on the floor- January is a bit mild  , but not as much as in 2012 ... So let's hope ! That February 2014 won't be a figtree killer .

Hey Rich I am probably going to have to buy a thermometer for the garage but I think my little electric heater is doing the trick. I cleared snow from
midnite to 1:30 AM last nite so I wouldn't have to do it today. Yuck. :-(

I'm sitting here in my velvet PJs. Inside temp is 70, downstairs temp is 71. Garage temp is 55. Greenhouse temp is 31, and my shed/outside temp is 18.

Well, I know one thing. It's going to be a early, long and hot summer this year. I should have lots of brebas to eat this year!
