The Potting Bench Reveal YAY!

Color me happy!

No more messy kitchen!

When we remodeled the house, we replaced all the doors.  JD built a work bench for himself from 2 doors and concrete blocks.  He duplicated it down under the big deck that connects to the lower driveway for a potting bench for me.

He spent a long time and fixed a lot of leaks hooking up the plumbing, but the faucet and sprayer both work.  It drains outside, and will soon have a bucket to catch the water for recycling in our drought conditions.

Here is the direct view.  It's pretty messy, but we have more doors, and more shelving will be built to hold all the stuff.

Here is the side view taken from the driveway.  You can see the stairs coming down.  The bricks cover the septic system.

This is too shady for any greenhouse thoughts, and too cool currently to root cuttings, but it does have electricity, so a lot more could be done in the future.

If you have suggestions or ideas they will be welcome!

Excellent! Great idea for used doors.

What a nice outdoor place that you can turn into a nice shaded place to sit............

Add some Christmas lights, a table to eat, and a place to keep the wine!

You darn Californians with your always perfect weather and all, you can be outside anytime you want!

Wow!! Suzi that is really neat!!! I just redid my bathroom and wish I saved the door from it to make a potting bench.

Very nice.. I'm jealous..

That's very cool!  Very clever, and it looks great.

I think he deserves an extra hug :)

Can I borrow him? I so need a place like that!!!

Very nice set-up.  I'm having a tough time envisioning an outdoor potting bench in my backyard since I just got in from shoveling about a foot of snow off my deck.  The deck is on the north side of the house and is getting zero sun.  Enjoy your new addition.  I am sure you will get a lot of use out of it.

Looks more organized than mine.

Suzi,

You can construct an outside plywood box a couple feet high with some shelves. You can make it a germination/cuttings box. Just add a heatmat inside and some LED grow lights. With a door that closes and some insulation it should never get colder then low 30s inside.

Thanks for all the positive comments and suggestions!  JD is now strutting around here like he hung the moon!

He did get his share of hugs, and a couple really fine dinners too!!

Anyway, one thing always leads to another!  We have decided to do a lean-to like this shed on a much smaller scale using the only glass window door we were able to save.  Combining the link with the photo on the South wall of the deck (where all the junk is next to the potting bench), but on the OUTSIDE of the wall.

So, basically, raised beds on a slant with a glass hinged roof like the photo above (using an 8' x 2.5' glass window door).  I could start cuttings in there, and move them once they root, and also use it for things like lettuce, seed starting, etc.

Again, any suggestions would be great!

Sweet!  Funny, had to laugh about your "no more messy kitchen".  I must have washed about 2 pounds of potting soil and perlite down the kitchen sink last weekend up potting cuttings to 1 gallon pots.

jealous :)

Wow. Very nice.  Everything looks so neat.
