The smallest cutting

Just wanted to give an update with some more photos...

This first photo shows the same wedge (but a side view) of the picture that I posted earlier in this thread in post #16... the third photo down where there's 3 "wedges" in a Root Riot cube.  This is the one that's on the bottom of the three - not the one with the root coming out of it.

Anyway, I separated those 3 so the one with the root could have a cube of its own to grow and prosper (picture attached at the bottom of this post), and I put the other 2 in this cube.

Meanwhile, all &%$# broke loose when a power brown-out burned out my well pump and at the same time my hot water heater went out.  Also had no power for a day (and of course the day temps got to mid 80's...).  So 3 days of running around and fixing things resulted in me not paying any attention to my figs.  Consequently, I lost my Col de dame Blanc, 2 Macools, several missions, some turkish browns, and a couple of my Turkish imports (all that I had just potted up).

Clearing out what survived in my root riot tray, I found this little lady... though at first glace it looked lost beyond saving.  But as you can see, she still has some life in her, bringing some hope into an otherwise lousy week!

So here's the one with the root that I moved to its own home... it may be hard to see in this picture, but it's got about a 1/8" spark of growth emerging on the right side of the node.

Both of these are pretty well beat up, but I'm hopeful!

JR,
I think your lady just set a record!! That is totally impressive!
Sorry for your lost figs caused by a power brown-out ..
Just curious, how did you loose so many in 3 days? What happened to them?

soon we can fax the cuttings to each other.... :)

Everything pretty much went wrong, and it started even days before the power outage fiasco....

In an effort to make more room in the house, I up-potted a bit too early and I had the bright idea that if I used some of my existing garden soil mixed with the potting mix the next up-potting might go a little easier.  And then when I moved them outside I didn't have them all in one place, so keeping track of them was taxing (even before the power outage fiasco).  I placed some of them in a location where I had thought that I had accurately tracked shadowing from the house vs. sun in order to get 1 hour of sun.... but of course I had miscalculated, and they ended up getting over 3 hours of direct sun.  Lost a few that way.

Then of the ones that did get the right amount of sun/shade, a bluejay (I suspect) pulled out and/or overturned the transplanted cuttings, still snug in their Root Riot cubes but exposed to the elements causing them to dry out.  Lost a few that way.

Then in my Root Riot tray, which I have in the cellar, I knew I would forget about them (as I faced the well pump and water heater issues) so I gave them a good dose of water - bad idea.  Lost a few of those.

Add that to the already hectic week of putting together a turtle pond for my daughter's 13th birthday present, coupled with learning how to take of 2 newly adopted Cream Legbar chickens for my 16 year old daughter, the end result was that things completely got away from me and my poor figs suffered.

The only ones that made it through without showing any signs of stress or trauma were the ones that were already established, in good potting soil, and/or were already in the ground.  All in all, I lost about 25% of my figs.

As I'm looking at my figs now, I'm thinking I may be overwatering them to compensate for my earlier neglect!  Hopefully one of these days I'll learn......
