the story to my first ever hardy chicago

Hi all,

I'm Marco from Montreal
It's been a couple of weeks I have been reading this forum, for diverse information and knowledge on the fig world,
you look like a great bunch of people all crazy about the same fruit.

My story with figs started as a child my grandpa had a tree in his garden that would produce loads of little dark figs the size of a quarter, then my parents bought a house and my dad had a BT but produced maybe 1 fig a year, at some point he got fed up an away it went.

but in 2010, I bought two small trees from Richter in ontario because it was the only place I found some, first year the tree grew nicely but produced nothing,
in 2011, it started in the garage and when I brought it outside the leaves burned and he started new leaves but still no fruit...
this year was his test year, and they produced maybe 9 fruits total,
wich are starting to darken,

It is now in the ground and will probably pass winter buried in the ground again.

I'll post pics later on
for now I have to check my figs

Marco,

Welcome to the forum!  What a nice introduction!  Wishing you luck with your figs!

Hello there Marco, from Montreal!

Welcome to the forum, and to cutting edge opinions, and collective knowledge about growing some of the best tasting figs in the world.

Do you know about "Adriano's World of Figs"?  He is in Ontario @ 905-827-3105.  Check out the site and see what's available.

Have a wonderful time growing fig trees.  Hope they will survive the cold winters.  Since you mention having a garage, you might want to containerize your trees and store them in the garage for the winter.  Then take them out as the weather warms up in the spring.  Then Marco will have nice trees each year....and figs too.

Good luck.  Ask all your questions here...you'll get plenty of answers.  (What is your climate zone?)

Frank

PS:...Yes, this forum is "a great bunch of people all crazy about the same fruit"....and so will YOU be.  In due time.  : )))))

Welcome to the forum! - John

Be patient with Adriano, I waited 3 years just to find out anything I want he doesn't have available.

Chivas....

If I had known this I would have never recommended Adriano.  I did so because of location.  Thanks for that information.

Frank

MARCO....post #5...

Thank you for the answers,
I discovered about adriano, last year, but Toronto is quite a drive from here,
brugmansia-quebec is closer to my house and seems to offer interesting varieties, but I plan on getting a couple of cutting from trees I spotted while driving and from my dad's friends

Frank my zone is 5b, this summer was really hot and dry, so nice,

Here are  my 2 HC in march 2011, when they started in the garage a little too early,

and this is how they look today (I outlined the trunks in red to make it easier to see)

It started nicely this spring and then it stopped growing, I think I will prune close to the ground to promote the new growth that is forming there and keep it like a bush instead of a tree,

this is an airlayer that I tried this summer,
it put out new roots, but after I cut it from the tree, I realized the roots were brown and dry, so it all wilted, after 2 weeks in moist soil it is showing signs of new buds,

and finally a tree I bought at a local nursery,
and already ate its only fig last week, unknown for now
but i suspect a BT, altough the fig was rather small,

for being hooked, I think I am, as I said, figs remind me of my youth,
and my trip to Italy visiting family and enjoying tree ripened fresh figs

thanks for reading me

The hardy chicagos will grow best with 2 months of bi-weekly feedings of fertilizer as soon as green growth starts to show.
