The strangest thing has happened to my plants....

Okay, since Sunday morning my 2 Brown Turkey and each and every different type of Celeste that I own has had overly droopy leaves.   Now keep in mind these plants are different ages, some from cuttings I started, some from plants that I obtained this season, etc.  So for every day since I noticed the strange wilt I watched and worried. I checked moisture levels--a'okay.  All the other fig cultivars were fine---no droop.    They are ALL clustered together, so its not like it has to do with their placement.
Well, today---each plant is back to normal.  No more strange droop.

I SO wish I had taken photos of each day, so you could see the progression of the droopy leaves in those plants, and then today at around 10a NO MORE DROOP AT ALL.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?   I just thought it strange that this happened to my 2 BT and the various Celeste cultivars.

Glad to here is all okay! :)

is the temp dropping there in your area? it's been unusually mild aug. here in nc. i keep my kathleen black in partial shade, and noticed that soil is rather not drying up like my other two plant in full sun. it was sort of droopy last few days. i'm thinking about cutting the waters to the trees to every other day soon, then every 3 days.

by oct., i really don't have to water too often. i noticed that soil will stay wet for a week at a time.

i like my irrigation system. don't have to worry about forgetting to water. just check the system once a week or so and make sure the battery is good.

I'm glad all are ok now. it is pretty strange thing that it happened only to two kind... may be it's the temperture changing too quick?

Sara,

I'm pretty sure it's just the sun/heat. I know it only happened to a couple of trees. But I think it has alot to do with what sort of mood your tree is in at the time.

I've actually observed this alot. One day the leaves of a select few trees will be drooping. Next morning all is well. Not sure why it happens to some & not others. It could have something to do with moisture levels within the plant on that particular day, the angle of the sun, the alignment of the planets. Who knows? But I don't think it's anything to worry about.

Like you said, by the next day (or even by late evening) they seem to be back to normal. Some of mine have been doing this too. Just be sure to not mistake this for an actual need for water.

For a few nights before the drooping happened it was quite mild at night, days were typical.  I suspect it was the temp drop in the evenings that affected the BTs and Celeste plants.
I guess what I will have to start doing is print a 7 day forecast and monitor accordingly, it is not cold enough in the evenings to start the fig-shuffle just yet.  And like you, Pete, consider dropping the watering amount to signal to the fig that dormancy time is approaching.
Group---due to the fact that this is the FIRST dormancy season for me and my fig-babies....is it appropriate to start the decrease in watering now?? (Of course, you don't want them to dry out, but the figs need to recognize that "dry season" is coming...aka WINTER).

OH----is there a website that anyone knows of that you can find a temperature "look-back"...morning/afternoon/evening, etc??   I can find 7-day future forecast, but not having any luck finding a "look-back" type site.

Thanks all!!   Sara

It could be pythium, the cloudy and sunny weather will make pythium show up, but if it has stopped, it could just have been the changes in the humidity, it got dry and hard for the plants to take up water fast enough even though they have lots of water they are just not being active with the weather or it could be from humidity it cannot transpire properly.

Chivas,
I think you've got a little better handle on what I had in mind and was trying to bring out.

Makes sense Chivas.  Bill--thanks for being ready to chime in to help explain it to me!   And Brent---WeatherUnderground was EXACTLY what I was looking for.  Thank you to everyone!!!
