I've not had as much time to work with the figs lately but have been doing the minimun to keep them alive and healthy. Been working like a dog to fill in a small pond and then renovate the veggie garden for a large summer harvest. Already have ripe tomatoes, squash, and green beans.
Fig-wise, I've had a bit more time this past week and have been doing some delayed transplanting, both recently rooted cuttings as well as plants that already had been in pots but needed to be moved up. Been having fun building piles of planting mix - compost, manure, old mix, new mix, soil, etc. Whatever I think will work. It sure makes it easier when there is lots of prepared moist mix and many figs (and other things) that need moving up. Glad I have lots and lots of empty pots in all sizes. :)
There are already nice figs forming on some of the trees started last year. Atreano had so many nice-looking plump ones I decided to thin some. And babies on some other trees that are old enough too. Been doing some pinching as well. There are many figs I've not tasted yet, and am hoping to get a fruit or two from many of them later this year.
It's been an odd weather year. Extremely dry with only about 5 inches in the 'rainy' season (average about 15). The hillsides are already toasty brown. And already the apricot fruits are coloring up. That is very early - it's still May!
