There is no stopping them now!

Here comes Spring!!!!  Hey guys, no figs to show but I do have a few plants.  Here a few of my trees inside my garage.  These guys were asleep about 2 months ago!  There's no stopping them now!!!!  The first to wake up were JH Adriatic and Adriatic BRN then Italian Honey.  My Dwarf Blacks, Lyndhurst White AE, and several Mystery figs have leaves.  Plus my Mulberries just took off!!!  And my Meyer lemon has flowers!  CAPS LOCK OMG!

On my 3 tier shelf, I got a lot small trees in cups.  The top shelf has a total of 96 alone.  I rooted these late last year.  They went dormant and now are waking up.  My garage temperture ranges btw 53 and 57 degrees.  Its insulated plus the daily inserting of my wife's car keep the temp above 50.  The garage door is also insulated.  The 2 windows keeps it bright inside and the windows are facing Southwest.

The 2 black and green trash can contain my special soil mix that I use to repot my trees.  I just finished potting up an Improved Brown Turkey and I got another Brown Turkey NOT to repot.  that's the one on top of the Brute can.  The orange bucket contains my liquid rooting hormone.  I dip my tree in there and let them sit for about an hour before repotting.  Just about every pot you see in these picture is a fig tree minus 2 Mulberries and one Meyer Lemon tree.  Also on my tower shelf are a set of growing lights.  Enjoy!

I can only imagine some neighbor visiting your garage for the first time to borrow a tool. What the.......!?

Fun!  Spring!  I have trees that never even went dormant!  It's a happy time!

Dennis, I noticed you have lots of white pots... why white and why light color? why black? Does the color makes any difference in how the plant grows?

For sure, there will be no STOP now! awesome pics!

Dang!  Ambitious fellas!

Now that is an offseason setup! It won't be long now. Phil the Groundhog confirmed it.

Hey Bill, that already happened 3 times.

Grasa, I think white or light pots are cooler than black pots.  White reflects heat better.  But I don't think they make any differences on how they grow.

Yeap, John the groundhog did not see its shadow in Charlotte, so I guess I can start my annual repotting of trees.

It's going to be a good year folks!  Get ready and start your figs!!!!!

Figs figs figs. I love figs

Jennifer

The black pots will promote faster root growth which is good or bad depending on what's going on at the time.

Holy Cow, Batman!

'Fig garage' does not have the same ring as 'sardine can', but they are similar, lol.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but do you have any uhmm, FIG TREES!

Anthony, the real question is:  Do you have a car?  If so, did you park it in the street so it can get keyed by vandals?  I did see that bike wheel............ Hmmmmmmmmmm

In hotter climates, the color of the container absolutely makes a difference in terms of root / plant growth. Rot growth / efficiency begins to taper off at about 85F. In Houston, I would notice a significant difference between the sunny side and shaded side of the containers. If you are looking at white containers, mahe sure they are completely opaque. The solar gain can be greater than the heat absorbed by a black container. In cooler climates, the heat gain can be beneficial in getting the trees going in spring. If the roots are not happy, the top will not stay happy.

Dennis,

Your trees look pretty cozy in the garage. I hope you have help when you pack / unpack all of them.

Wow that's serious. How many different type figs
Do you have there?
Thanks George

I now realize reports of my fig addiction are greatly over exaggerated.

Sir, step away from the fig.

I am always amazed at how neat and orderly most here keep their trees. Looks awesome Dennis!

Impressive!

Dennis, how do you handle all the root pruning? Excellent work as usual.

Navid.

Dennis, do you somehow water any of the plants somehow?  Or are they growing slow enough to stay moist?

Wow.... How do you check on those figs in the back of the piles?

Most are in self watering pots. Every week, I pull out the water hose and squirt water in the pot opening. I also give them water on top. As for root pruning, I only root prune the tree that has the most need for water. Right now I only have 7 big ones that need to be root pruned. I also use a moisture meter.

after this thread, i went home and took a look at my trees.. they are breaking bud. and i still didn't do root pruning. the large trees are going into their 2nd year growth in 10 gal. urgh.. i know they need it..
