This Is First Day Of Spring

Today March 20th is first day of spring and in Southern Hem its there first day of Autumn.
Well i surely hope its not an indication of anything for fig season here in my neck of the woods cause its Snowing out here.
My fig plants are back in garage and will be back out monday as temps will hit 50 again for several days , each night when sun gets real low they will come back in garage as temps forcast will be mid to low 30s.
The good thing is i can actaully give them attention now for the season observing some breba coming out buds shedding there outer shell and others turning green and swelling.
Life is good but to darn short in my opinion.

Martin I already noticed some main crop figs pushing out on one of my Colasanti Italian figs can you believe that? And yes Its not a typo main Crop figs

Hi Nelson,
is your plant very young .

Martin I dont know the exact age to be honest with you I bought it in January of this year and it broke dormancy early february, for sure its atleast 2 years old I will post pics of it when I get to work on Monday.

Ya Martin weather is lovely today and tomorrow, 2 of my figs I took down to basement for couple of days.(it stays around F 65 in there and they`re by the window)

Martin
We call it official spring. The real spring comes a month after the official spring here. We still expect 18F some time  this coming week.

Hi Ottawn,
i know what you mean, we sometimes complain when it too hot here with humidity and complain when its too cold least i did when i had to work outdoors.
The Misses complains when its cold and snowy turn up the heat, then in summer when AC is on she complains shes cold in house , i politely say let the dogs out in yard.  ; )
She wants to live in Florida no too cold but she will complain, either way i will help her follow that dream and she lets me follow mine with small things in life .
It all works itself out .

You will go a long way Martin since you practice 'give and take' at home and in your fig hobby. May all your and your Misses dreams come true.

Martin,

Yes, first day of Spring. Wasn't it glorious?! Clear blue skies. Warm, sunny, 75F, all the fig trees leafing out, some brebas staring to form. Love it. Come on, dude, you gotta move. I feel your pain, but the solution is not a secret.

Snowed here yesterday, then it was much nicer in the afternoon.
Jon, this will be the first time in many years that I haven't gone 'home' to San Diego early in the year. My brothers and I all mentioned that we became gardeners *after* moving away from the world's best climate, what *were* we thinking???

Remis sounds like you have a great area to place them in till weather breaks.
Nelson i look forward to your pictures as always.
Ottawan thanks for the nice comment.
Jon your are absolutely right . One day i look forward to a better climate. ; )

My basement is lookout so is suny in there ,I`m sure figs like there more then garage .

Martin here is the plant I was telling you about, Italian Fig from Colasanti Farms.

Nelson that is one healthy looking tree and loaded with figs already I'm sure it will be very productive for you

Sal

Thanks Sal, there is currently 7 tiny figs on it I have 2 of these both are more or less the same size and age but the 2nd one has no figs yet, will be taking one to my parents backyard in about a month. I believe this is the Dark Italian Fig from Colasanti Farms in Canada I have another Italian Fig from Colasanti farms that I bought last year but believe its the white fig as the leaves are completely different.

Hi Nelson,
Seems like a good amount of green growth for breaking dormancy last month.
You might have to stake that container down so it dont take flight on you.  ; )

Martin you aint kidding I have some branches that grew 1.5ft in 6 weeks I bought it in Late january and the buds were just starting to break as it was in a Greenhouse. I think im going ot airlayer some of the lower branches this summer and try shapen it to more of a tree instead of a bush. Any Idea when Airlayers can be started?

Hey Nelson im no Einstein but if it were me wanting to start an airlayer i would choose the thickess green branch and go for it.
Some might say wait till its outside in the sun and more warmth perhaps ?
But i would try it nonetheless i doubt it would harm the plant.

Hey Martin I think I will give it a try, When the sun is out the plant does get sun for most of the day as you can see its been growing vigorously in the last 6-7 weeks. My goal is to get one in a tree form to look like your lovely plants. So you think I should try it on the newgrowth? Or cut the ring on last years growth?

I would try it on new growt and nip the top of the branch your trying it on for airlayer or cut plant up and propagate the stems and save one lower branch for airlayer if the below paragraph is something you want to do if it applies to your plant.
Neslon the plant pictured, is that tallest new green branch thats groing straight up attached to the main stem the brown one right in the middle.
Reason i ask if so that plant would be fine to grow in tree form if thats want you want to do.
Where the string with tag is attached on the fork branch i would keep as well, now if were mine everything else would get cut off except those 2.
I know I know its hard to do and will make the tree naked and bare and you won;t get as many figs this season because of loss of those lower branches but this is what i do .
The tree will grow faster upwards and you have to stake it cause of the wind when it reaches a height that you like you nip the top and keep nipping it in season beacuse several branches will sprout where you nip it eventually.
Afrewards the trunk diameter will expand . Sooner or later you will get lateral branches and want to keep a few to have nice tree shape a few you may want to cut .
This is what i usually do with mine but not all, as i see yours is aggressive and reminds me of my ronde and dark portuguese of last season.
Some i dont touch because there not as aggressive and slow to grow and i leave them be and see how they grow the following season but may cut some lateral branches off my slow growers to help them grow up a little bit.
With your it will easily grow to 5 feet i bet and you will be topping it off and get lateral growth by seasons end im sure.
Its just this way you sacrfice figs but for me its worth it .
Main reason i dont get a lot of cuttings for a few seasons to send out.

Yes, what a spring week it is going to be for the fig plants brought outside!
Lesson learned. Next time I will wait at least until the end of March here (or sometimes the first week of April). I had brought out only a few plants which were in the front of the narrow cold storage room and the rest are still in there. March can get too crazy here and instead of heads up can give me a push-back!

Hi Akram,
mine have been out about 5-7 times and stood out thru the night several times thats it.
They been stuck in garage for now as not as cold as you but last several nights been in low 20s.
If it helps you feel better i have just some green buds and most yet are still a brownish.
Gosh sometimes i hate to type these things but thats life in some of our cold climates.
Like Jon said what are we waiting for Paradise is really in the big scope of things not that far away.
But dont rush it because in 185 days our fig season will be almost over with !
Best Season

Martin,

Not long ago I was reporting to you about the birds and the bees and the trees. I said that in some places they were in full bloom. That was in that part of the world I was in.

Right now I am in Mt Pearl, Newfoundland and it is coming down!
8" to 12" expected for tonight.

If only Jon could be here.

Hi Rafed,
you sure get around. Recently i read where you were in Laredo Tx.
Reminded me of a road trip we took back around 1981 in my 68 eldorado about 2 am we were 20 miles outside of town on the e-way and broke down (long story)
Anyhoot a guy in a 18 wheeler stopped to help the 3 of us and wheni read that i said to myself hmm you never know its a small world.
Happy trails and keep that stuff up there please.

Nelson, that is a beautiful looking tree!

My Hollier has two figs on it, came out of dormancy 4-5 weeks ago, has a lot of beautiful leaves and growth on it also.  I love the big, round leaves of Hollier.
