Time to start thinking about airlayers

I like to see mine hanging by the Equinox.

You are in zone 9 so it should not cause any problem.
Our frost free time start after mid-May about 3rd week of May so Equinox is not the right time for us.

Very nice, How early can we start air layering?, I bought a 4 Ft tall potted brown turkey last week, it has 7 small branches on top with about 5 to 10 inches long with small figs.

Enthusiasm is overcoming you!
Equinox /better temperatures are not too far away.

@ Ottawan,Yes in your zone the window is shorter. But you can still think about it<G>.
These air layers are being placed in lieu of pruning to return the tree to a more open center.
A couple of branches went more vertical than I'd like and are now shading out 3 horizontal
branches that I'd prefer.Red tape indicates branches to be removed.

Different angle.

I figure it'll take 3 tranches of smaller layers this year and 2 #5's placed this time next year on the heavy lumber to restore the "bowl" shape.

@ricky,you can place layers after bud break.

Paul, do you remove bark when you set your air layers? It's time for me to set air layers here in zone 8b.

I'm not the Paul you asked, but I'm going to throw in my two cents anyway. The first year I made air layers, I had 100% success. I completely girdled (stripped the bark) about a one inch section of the branch, applied Clonex, and then wrapped it up in moss, plastic wrap, and foil.

The next year, many of my air layers failed. I did the same thing as the year before, but this time I did not girdle them, nor did I apply Clonex. I haven't noticed a big difference using Clonex when rooting cuttings, so I'm theorizing that I had a higher success rate the first year because I girdled them.

Hi Jerry,

I remove bark on anything I deem large enough to support the air layer with out assistance.
The small stuff I do not remove a ring but slice or score it lengthwise. All these are on second year wood,on first year I wouldn't bother.

I get the strongest, quickest layers from equinox through solstice.I stop placing at the end of June.Last year I stopped counting layers placed when they got into the high 80's,I did note I had a high failure rate on anything placed after mid July.

Hope all's well down there.

Hey Paul I am assuming these are current pics of your trees?  Now?  If true, wow!

Beautiful!

Updating on these air layers that were set 3.1 through 3.14.They've all come off the tree, have worked their way through my humidity bins and are now solid in dappled light.

One of the 3x8's.

Largest of this run in the #1 root maker on the right.

These were all girdled as high as possible to stimulate solid downward root growth.

A plug of spag was placed in the bottom of the container to prevent media loss,Clonex was then applied to the girdle and node above.Media was then added with another plug of spag sealing the top.

Quite surprised at how quickly these came off the tree.I started pulling them 31 days after they were placed. They worked their way through my humidity bins for varying lengths of time, some took 3 days and others took 10.
