Unfortunately these figs are only available in the rural and farmers markets in small towns and villages...
In the bigger stores in town, they buy Turkish's only.

Yes, your friend is correct. The small lesser quality dry figs are fermented and distilled to produce a very strong 'aguardente' locally known as 'bagaceira' or 'bagaço' .
With this very alcoholic drink they prepare a fig liqueur adding a bunch of leaves of fig , grains of coriander, a stick of cinnamon and sugar... after seasoning this mix for a couple of weeks they add on water from the fountain and after being filtered you have a nice, strong and fig flavored drink.
The distillation of figs is by now complete and the farmers are again busy cleaning their gear and alembics for the medronho (arbutus unedo) which is about ripe for pickup.
