Tiny green "cutting" propagation

I just wanted to share the photos of the tiny green off-shoot that was saved from going into a dumpster.
On July 13th I was moving some pots and knocked off a little would-be brach from an LSU Purple cutting. First I thought, oh well, not a lucky day... But then decided to put it in a moist seed-starting mix to see what would happen.
I dipped it in some Clonex and covered the pot with a grocery container. So it didn't feel lonely, I did the same with a Laurel Bay. (Actually, in case the LSU dies, I wanted to see if some other cutting survives).

Today, almost 2 weeks later, the tiny thing is still alive! It seems I may have a new unexpected addition to my collection.

Now I am curious, is it possible to root a fig leaf?

Nice work greenfig...it is not always easy to root green cuttings...I have tried several times and have had only limited success...my biggest problem usually arises when I take the cutting out of the humidity dome environment and attempt to uppot it to a 1gal. container...the shock is usually more than the tender plant can take...so far I have only had two that have made a successful transition...good luck with yours.

Thanks, Vince!
In my case, I hope I don't have to uppot it for a long time since it is in the soil already and the pot is large enough for the fig to get larger and stronger.

If moving to the 1 gallon is when you get a failure, eliminate the move. Start the cutting in the one gallon. I have done many by placing the cutting in a one gallon of UPM, covering the pot and cutting with a one gallon ziplock bag and clear packing tape. Keep in complete shade but plenty of indirect light. Often have roots in two weeks. After several weeks remove bag but keep in shade gradually introducing to morning or afternoon sun. Always reduce leaf area.

Interesting you mentioned that. I did this yesterday but decided to fit 4 cuttings in a 3 gal wide pot. Will see how they manage the direct in the soil rooting.

Jake..thanks for the info on 1gal....will definately try that method next time I deal with green cuttings.

I wonder how Root Riot cubes would fit in that equation. Any thoughts.

Greenfig, that system should work great for you.Good Luck!

Vince, when I transfer to gallons, I don't water them I just make sure the soil mix is properly moistened(to the point where you grab a handful and press it barely stays together). I put the gallons back in the humidity bins until the start to grow, then wean them slowly out of the bins. Water lightly as needed. Have had much better success this way.

Charles, the root riot cubes work great to start green cuttings, just like dormant ones but much faster.

You gave me hope! I just knocked a would be branch off of my tree about 15 minutes ago. I'm going to use a the root riot cube or a mixture of promix hp and vermiculite. I don't know which would be better.
