Figs have phenols that cause browning which needs to be removed. It was a constant struggle to keep the base of the plant alive. My reason was to "clean up" some sick plants which I managed to do without TC or thermotherapy anyway... There is also endogenous fungi that seems to occupy all but the newest growths. I wouldn't call my attempt successful, although I didn't have any experience it seemed like a very, very slow way of propagating figs.
My advice, start from cuttings, you are only talking about ~100 trees. Or order a flat from Agristarts direct.
