To those who drown their young plants

I am reposting this for newer members who overwater rooted cuttings and young plants.

Try a faster draining mix, I don't think extra holes will help too much. For young plants I use 3 parts pine bark fines, 2 parts perlite, and 1 part pro mix or spagnum peat based mix plus dolomitic lime in a cloth pot like root pouch. It is extremely hard to drown a plant in a mix and pot like that.

Don't water again till the pot feels light.

You will have to water more often when it is hot but better than a rotted plant.

Thanks a lot Jason.
It is very helpful info.

Does anyone know, from where i can get pine bark fines?

I can't find pine bark fines around my area so I use pine bark mini nuggets from Walmart. I use them in the soil mix, on the bottom of the pot and for mulch on top of the pot. I'm happy with results and so far the trees aren't complaining either! Sometimes you got to make due with what's available.

Jason,
Thanks for starting this Topic. Most of my failures are due to over watering in the initial stages, but I'm learning slowly.

Imran,
Agway stocks Pine Bark Mulch (blue bags),3 Cu Ft about $6.00. Its the correct size, but I have been sifting it thru 1/2 inch hardware cloth for a better mix and usually get about 1-1/2 gallons larger than 1/2 inch.

Agway is where I get mine. It is very consistent quality. Lowes pine bark mulch in orange bag will work too but there's more wood and inconsistency in the bag.

I couldn't find any mini pine nuggets at lowes or home depot in my area. I did find regular pine nuggets at a local feed and supply store and just broke them by hand.

You want fine pine bark mulch not nuggets. It should mostly be small flakes of bark and not lots of wood. Guys in the northeast there are tons of Agway's in the area especially near nj and pa.
Here's a pic of what you would get from Agway.
