Great looking trees Herman.  Did you mulch them with leaves etc. or just let them tuff it out?  Most times when I do that, they start from the ground up each year here in Tenn, unless protected by planting near a wall or building or mulching heavy.

Great pics Herman.
Do you prune back in fall or spring ?

John

Herman, some of your trees look like they have large rocks or bricks around them. Is that just for decoration or do you use them to help absorb heat?

Thanks for sharing these great pictures Herman.

And those are clearly some very tough trees, surviving so well down to zero unprotected!

I think I need to be more aggressive in pruning.  Your trees will probably produce more fruit and less folage with this strong pruning back.  And it may also help with cold hardiness.  It is always the highest branches that get hit the hardest by the cold on a larger tree, so maybe it is good to just prune back hard in the late Fall.

Hope you are doing well my friend.

John

sirlampsalot:I did not place any mulch on these 5 trees, because I want to see how hardy they really are.
I also had other 12 cultivars protected,so I was assured I will have fruits anyway.

possum_trot:Large rocks are First for protection against Mower (my son)
Second:Tree sucks minerals out of them,as needed.
Third:Rocks get hot during day,and realises heat during night.
Heat much needed here in the Spring months,to push tree ahead faster in forming fruits.

Herman, how did your young Adratc JH make it outside with protection. I kept mine indoor and its leafing well on the south side with some glass protection next to the house. I am interested to place my Adriatic in ground & winter here is not as cold as in NJ.

Herman, how old are these trees?  Were they protected in their first few winters?

Paul:I kept 2  JH Adriatic for myself, planted inground with protection.
The plant that had 7 fruits last year died within 6 inches from ground, and the plant that had 2 fruits on died down to 10 inches from ground, but both are starting growing right now, being a little retarded in growth.
I think it will be a hardy cultivar  when old.
The trees in above picture are ,7,5,8and 6 years old, from left to right.
Of course there are 2 Marseilles vs black ,both of 7 yrs old.

Herman, Thanks for the feedback. I have a spot saved for JH Adriatic.
