Frank (FMD) inspired this broiled breakfast sandwich of Improved Celeste and Stallion Unknown figs with smoked cheddar and lightly sprinkled with mozzarella, seasoned salt, pepper, and South African Smoke Seasoning (Trader Joe's). My goodness...I need more figs.

Wonderful picture .

That looks AWESOME:)

Looks great.  Maybe I'll have enough figs to try these things someday   :)

Jimmie, very very nice.
You need to come by the house to pick up the RdB plant and a mess of celeste figs for more grilled fig and cheese sandwiches.

Oh. My. God.

Somebody needs to open a fig food truck.  Featured item has to be the broiled fig breakfast sandwich.  Take that EggMcMuffin.

That looks delectable!

EggMcMuffin don't stand a chance.

goss

Thanks all.
Same theme...different meal (dinner). Figs (Foxcroft Celeste) with pizza ("Italian" dough from Publix) topped with smoked turkey sausage glazed with hoisin, tomatoes, mozzarella, oregano, and basil. It was good.

That is one serious piece of pizza.  Really JD, you should start a fig food truck.

Top right. Counter clockwise.
Atreano. Had to pick early. A brown thrasher bit a hole into it. [1]
LSU Gold. Watery. Likely headed to fig heaven. [2]
Stallion. Dead ripe. Figgy taste. Jam consistency. They needed netting to get to this stage. [3]
Hardy Chicago. Dead ripe. Superior taste. Severly under rated. [4]

Today was a good day...a good evening to pick figs.

JD, you and mnedelcu take such great pictures, it makes me glad I have the nice monitor I do.

Thanks all

JD,

Dang dude! You're taking figs to a whole 'nother level. Nicely done.

The fig food truck might be nice but really, I just want the fig cook book!

I have some HC and MBVS that should be ripe in a couple weeks. I will have to try some of this fig cookin' madness ;-) .

Bill,
In previous seasons, we would eat the less than a handful of figs quickly and immediately. This is the first season that we have had enough to get a fig fix and also have some left over to 'play' with. The Foxcroft Celeste is responsible for that.

Every backyard grower needs a volume producer of good figs. Celeste and now Stallion (early), MVSB (mid), along with LSU Purple and Socorro Black (next) get the job done.

The FPP (Fig Protection Program) worked well while I was gone. My daughter picked twenty figs on yesterday (01 August) and she even saved me a special one. After she had eaten three of "these really good one right here", she saved one (Smith) for her Dad. I smiled, gave her a big hug, enjoyed it, and then went over to the dark side to pick these today (with Martin in mind)...less the MVSB and the Golden Celeste. The attached photos are from harvests on the 27th, 28th, and 29th. It took three years to get to this point with mostly potted fig trees but it is nice and we are thankful. Pananas won the taste test. Petite Negri was second. If Smith were allowed in the competition, it would have tied for first. The labels for Late Black and Hardy Chicago should be swapped.

Frank (FMD),
Petite Negri isn't so petite but it is damn good.

Incidentally, if you're still not sure whether it's a Petite Negri or a VdB, look at the stalk.  PN's really short, most of the time, while the other variants have longer stalks.

And yeah, crazy good photography, particularly the VdB 2013 page.

very tasty looking. nice work

Wow!! Wow!! Wow!!!!!!! That is some great photography!! I'm hooked on the Pananas Purple.

Great photos!  Gives me hope for the future.  My Celestes are old enough to produce but haven't.  I'm hoping the 1 or 2 they have will ripen.

How would you compare Petite Negri to Hardy Chicago in terms of flavor, productivity and ripening time?
