Today's harvest

Today for the first time this season, I had a real harvest. Yesterday I did taste a few but today I put some in a bucket. They are mostly Celeste with 2 LSU Golds, 1 LSU Tiger, and 4 O'Rourke. I like to pick and eat the Celeste at the just ripe stage because I find them more refreshing than at the very ripe stage. At the just ripe stage I can eat dozens but at the very ripe or candy stage they are too sweet and I can only eat a couple. Thus I make my rounds every day and pick the ones that have just ripened to that stage that I like. Of course I always miss a few and those I'll pick and eat at the candy stage.

In the photo it's not hard to ID the LSU Golds. The LSU Tiger is the large fig right below them and the 2 standing up in the upper right hand corner and below and to the right are O'Rourkes. The O'Rourke show stripes.

Hi genecolin,
I'm jealous ... as I need some more patience to start harvesting on mine.

Good for you Gene!! They look yummy.

Congrats Gene. I will be harvesting next month.

Great job there Gene.

They look yummy Gene........

Oh man, I'm only picking handfuls at a time since my trees aren't but a couple years old, I can't wait till I can pick bowl fulls in my yard. Looks good Gene!

where are the purple ones?

Nice treat, Gene!

Rich, none have ripened yet. They all seem to be later ripening although I did see a Gino's Black that is a day of so from being ripe. My hope is that the chickens don't see it first.

Zone envy.  I temper it by thinking of the people in zone 5.

Nice harvest.  Wishing my figs were at that stage.  Yum

I think that is a matter of opinion, and not mine. I like variety.

Nice harvest gene.  Congrats.

Nice! Love those LSU golds. Enjoy the fruit of your work!

Very nice!

That's beautiful!

Which do you like best?  How would you compare the flavor of the O'Rourke with the Celeste?

Thanks everyone for the comments. Noss give my trees a couple of weeks then you need to come over for a tasting and bring Ferd with you.

Wow, very nice.
Enjoy.

Nice Gene, hope the weather cooperates with you this year so the chicken don't eat more than you do. It's interesting to see how the Celeste hybrids look so much like Celeste. Keep the photos coming, and add some taste reports!

Gene,
Very nice harvest, nice to see your are not having the spoiling issues from a year ago.  I think everything in fig varieties is a matter of opinion.  Comparing a honey fig, like LSU Gold to a dark fig is a lot like comparing apples to oranges.  Papa John is my favorite dark fig, and LSU Gold is my favorite honey fig (of the few varieties of each type i have sampled) but I'm not sure what my favorite fig is...I like them all!  Thanks for the pic and happy figging!

Mike, I also hope the rains hold off for a while. If the chickens get too fat and might have to eat chickens. ha.
