Tonight's Plate

IMG_6124.jpg IMG_6136.jpg

Mmmmmmm.  We have been eating a few different figs daily.  Haven't had time to post anything until now.  This was tonights bounty.

Dall' Osso on top.  Posted this in my Dall' Osso thread but since it's on the same plate... It is a nice, 'meaty' fig.  Light on the sweetness and not too much figgy flavor.  Good texture and juicy.  Thin skin.  Very happy with it.

Corynth in the middle.  Wow!  I've had Maltese Falcon, Gino's, EBT, Dall' Osso and MBVS this year so far and this beats them all hands down.  Serious honey flavor.  Not too sweet.  Texture like jam.  Skin was a little thick but that doesn't bother me.  Here it is before picking.

EBT on bottom.  Best and earliest producer.  This tree has been giving me figs consistently since July 2.  Smallest was 24g, the largest 72g and everything in between.  Very consistent.  A little on the sweet side but a nice fig flavor.  Very juicy.  My smallest son likes this one the best!

They look great!

Beautiful plate Danny. They sure look Delisious . Is Corynth a Greek fig?
Thanks for sharing.

Chris - Saw your post on my other thread.  Sorry I didn't answer sooner on this thread.  Foy anyone else that's interested.

My Corynth

Looks Yummy.

Last night's plate.

I'm still liking that Corynth.  The stand-out on this plate was Wuhan.  Real nice red color on this one.  Shiny skin.  Skin was not thin but not thick either and easy to bite into.  Medium-sized eye.  Nice blonde interior.  Almost no cavity and very dense.  No seeds.  Nice light melon flavor and light sweetness.  Consistency reminds me of firm jello.  Delicious.

Black Zadar was so-so.  Don't know why.  The tree struggled last year and I think it was lacking nutrients this year.  Will root prune at the end of the winter and we'll try again next year.  Until then, it is dense and heavy for its size.  Large eye.  Jelly-like interior with a small seed crunch.  Berry flavor.  Little sweetness.  Large eye.  Seems to go from ripe to over-ripe in a matter of hours.

Calabria was delicious!  I grew this tree from a cutting taken in 2013 from a friend's heirloom.  His grandfather called it Calabria.  Weighed in at 103g!  Big as a pear!  Large eye but no splitting (this was also reported from my friend).  Nice pale green color.  Very thick skin.  Large cavity.  Pinkish-red interior with plenty of flavor.  Juicy, meaty and delicious.  Nice melon taste with just the right amount of sweetness.

I can go on and on but thought I might add a note about Patrick's Supergiant.  It seems the only thing giant about the variety is the growth habit of the tree.  It's very prolific and has large sized leaves.  Grows like a weed.  Otherwise, the fruit looks like Celeste but is sweet, sweet, sweet.  Much sweeter than Celeste.  Like pure sugar.  Only tasted one so far so we'll see if the others are like that, too.

Very nice figs thank you for posting those pictures! The Calabria reminds me of the White Genoa that is sold by Joe Morle.

Congratulations
Very nice and delicious figs.

Beautiful plates! I am sure you saw my plate on fb.

Yes.  Just commented now.  My Smith is still not ripe yet.  :(

Great looking figs, congratulations!

Hey Danny, you lucky Dog, now that's some beautiful Figs!! It's a shame I am not one of ya'lls  neighbor !! I would have to invite myself!! : )

Hi Danny...

Great looking fig feast!  Like your flavor descriptions, and critiques.  Continued good luck with the ongoing fig production.

A happy harvest to all.

Frank

Thank you for the comments, everyone.  This has been a delicious year so far!

Last night's plate.

Corynth is still my best!

Sweet Diana Unknown is tasting better as the season progresses.  Patrick's Supergiant is consistently super sweet.

New on this plate is Cucumber.  3 year old 'Bill's Figs' tree that grows fast.  Big leaves.  Huge figs!  I've read and saw pics of breba which are long and resemble a cucumber.  No breba for me.  Main crop started out 'longish' but developed into the pear shape that you see.  Everything picked has been over 100g so far.  Even pale green color that darkens up a little bite when ripe.  Thick skin.  Large eye.  Have not experienced any splitting.  Pink interior with course pulp and small cavity.  Very meaty.  Not juicy.  Big seed crunch.  Nice to bite into.  Light on the sweetness with a medium fig flavor that leaves a berry taste on your tongue when finished.  Keeping it!

The size of the fruit on Maltese Falcon has not been consistent this year.  It is still jam packed with flavor, though.

Hi nycfig,
I knew "Longue d'aout" could be named "cucumber" but honestly I thought nobody was still using that name ...
Looking at your "cucumber" fig, I have no doubt that she is the same as my "Longue d'aout" - some have it under "Niagara black". Are you growing her in a greenhouse ?
Normally those figs get a violet blush on the skin. But the interior is exactly like my "Longue d'aout". It is very recognizable.
Mine are still waiting to ripen this year. I haven't had a single breba on my "Longue d'aout". Main crop ripens between mid-September and the end of September here on my in ground tree.
For this year the main crop looks promising !
"Cucumber" is a really nice fig :) .

jdsfrance - I didn't know that about LdA.  I am growing that one also but it is young.  Not growing in a greenhouse.  Is it possible the violet blush is absent due to age?

Another delicious plate of figs!  Enjoy!

Danny, the cuke looks interesting. Did you compare its leaves to LdA leaves??

Nice looking figs Danny.  Nice harvest!

Great looking figs and variety.  Need to look more into that EBT.  Figs for 4th of July up here in the North... Wow.

Thank you again everyone for all the comments.

Rafael - Went and checked early today.  My LdA is still too young to make any comparison.

Fred - EBT is truly one of my favorite varieties after Corynth.  We've already harvested a few dozen large and delicious figs and it's still going.  Love it!

Last night's plate.

Corynth is still the best!

New on the plate is Kathleen's Black.  6 year old tree.  I've already tasted a few and they were nothing to write home about.  They were small and the taste was just... eh.  These are the first of the season that we like.  The size seems to be getting a little more consistent, too.  It really is a jet black fig.  Small to medium eye.  The skin is firm but thin and cracks when it swells.  The fruit doesn't get damaged but develops those nice white longitudinal 'channels'.  It is a dense fig with no cavity.  Heavy for its size.  Thick, heavy pink/red pulp through and through with a nice amount of juiciness.  Wife said texture was jammy, I say fine to medium.  Either way it was really good and could agree that there was a small amount of seed crunch with a medium fig flavor and a light sugary taste.  Yummy!

IMG_6372.jpg IMG_6374.jpg IMG_6379.jpg IMG_6401.jpg IMG_6403.jpg IMG_6405.jpg IMG_6406.jpg

Hardy Chicago is what it is, but I had to raise my eyebrows to these.  They were very sweet and refreshing.  Striking red pulp.  Had a real strong berry flavor with an acidic aftertaste.  Real good!

Last night's plate

IMG_6555.jpg IMG_6714.JPG

New on this plate was Nero 600M and Strawberry Verte.

The Nero 600M was just, eh.  Nothing great.  This was only the first one so we'll see.

Strawberry Verte was a real looker!  The skin is pale green (bright) and the pulp was blood red.  Made a nice contrast.  Very sweet, too.  Tasted like honey coated with sugar!  The pulp had a great consistency and nice seed crunch.  Made you want to take two bites instead of gulping it down in just one.  This is one the kids will love.
