I ordered a one gallon tree from Burnt Ridge nursery and got a bareroot tree. It's very thin and tall with no growth. I was expecting to get a active tree in a pot. Also this is my first time ordering from a nursery. Is it normal practice to send a bareroot tree that's labeled as one gallon?

Seems a bit odd to me. Did they not mention anywhere that it would be shipped bare-root? If not, it does seem misleading. By now hopefully you have potted it up and it is recovering in a shady spot.

It must have been stored in a refrigerator to have no growth at this time of the year. So it might be fine. You'll just have to see if it pushes new growth. Since it's June It can still push growth this year but obviously you won't get a crop. It is odd though. If it doesn't push new growth fairly quickly then it was probably dead when you got it.

No where on the site did it say it would be shipped bareroot. Even the tag on the plant says gallon. It was $20 for a gallon and $8.50 for a 4 inch pot. I'm going to send a email and ask what happened. I do have it potted up right now in shade.

Everything I've ever ordered from Burnt Ridge has been bareroot, so I kind of expect everything of theirs to be bareroot. Although I do think it is a little misleading to sell something as 1-gallon and ship as bareroot.

I recently purchased 2 trees from Stark Bros. and they both arrived bare root as well. Potted them up, and they immediately put out a bunch of growth
