Too late to change pots?

Hey fig folks,

Is it too late to move this Marseilles Black VS to a bigger pot?

I think it's going to outgrow this pot before the season's end. Pot is

Is it safe to move it? Do you think it is actually necessary?

Figs don't mind having confined roots. How long has the tree been in this particular pot? It seems happy and there is not excessive foliage for the roots to support. My opinion is to leave it alone this season and when it goes dormant you can root prune and repot or go to a larger size altogether.

I have successfully up-potted during growing season. It can certainly be done. If you decide to do it, don't go too big too fast and be careful to prevent over-watering.

What size pot is it in ? What ever it is leave it be. If it is drinking water fast. Buy a terracotta pot basin ( round tray ) put water in it and it will draw it up as needed.

Thanks for the replies so far y'all. The pot is about 12 inches high and wide. The tree has only been in the pot about a month since I received it. My fear is that not only will it outgrow the pot too fast, but also the summer heat. I'm near Dallas and temperatures approach and exceed 100 every summer. I was thinking about buying a larger pot and putting two of my trees in one just to conserve room and give the roots plenty of protection from the heat.

Whatever you do, do not disturb the roots during growing season. I just move the whole rootball and cover very carefully with soil in new pot.

SAS ....Good advice.
Best bet is too let it be till its done. When a tree is dormant you will still get root development so it will be settled in its new pot for next spring. Tight roots produce figs. :)

Well I move them myself growing or not. I often when rooting cuttings I have to up-pot them, so if they can handle it then, they certainly can handle it when bigger and older and more adjusted.
I have had live plants sent to me in the mail, I had no choice but to put it in a pot.  One I just got is green house grown so it needs to be acclimated to full sun besides being ripped out of soil, mailed, which took 3 days and potted in different soil, no greenhouse, cold temps too, it's 40 right now outside. It looks fine. They are tough plants if you ask me. Often I hear they like tight roots, although I also hear in ground out produce in pot figs. My guess is because of the small pot size, it can't really grow and be more productive. Mine are all overpotted slightly when I transplant. I go from a 5 inch pot to 3-5 gallons, then to 15 gallons. I'm from the school of giving a plant room to grow. Also I use fabric 15 gallon pots, and because they air prune in these, it's like a 30 gallon hard pot. I may up figs to 20 gallons, maybe some favorites to 30 gallons, but no more. I will root prune at that point every 4 years, or until the fabric pot gives out. Everybody has their own methods. i never lost a tree yet doing this.
