Too many fig trees?

Apparently some people like figs.

What a great location for them. Very nice.

Er... wouldn't another row of figs placed on the ground in front look good? That would mean you 'need' even more... ;)

Oh yes plenty room for expansion. That display looks good and almost all of the trees seem to be around the same age/size

You still have some grass.

Oh, no where near enough...

Gina,
One problem with this location is there is a bear who has not yet discovered these trees. If you look closely at this picture you can see my Conadrias are getting fat and there are a ton of Paradisio and Mary Lane Seedless, not to mention the ones running out of fruit as I've already eaten them. We have a lot of bears here (and a ton of everything else) and I hope they realize the apples are a bribe to stay away from the figs. I just got one of those motion sensor sprinklers and will install this weekend, but. . .

Looks great and proudly displayed. No such thing as too many I say.

Sorry I'm a house junkie- Federal Style? Figs look great.

House? What house? ;) ;)

Sorry Dominick I have no idea. Stupidly big brick thing, but has nice plant room for my coffee trees and air purifying plants. And my pitcher plants for the darn stink bugs.

I like the Brick style old homes of the mid atlantic area. More natural look than the vinyl Colonials up in MA.

Really? Stupid question. There is no such thing as too many fig trees.

D,
The last house I built was 2 salt boxes joined at a right angle. Was grey with white trim and looked like it came from Nantucket Island. It was a timber frame I built for my ex-wife as she was from Mass. If you go to dreaming creek timber frames and look at residentials in the portfolio the house labeled "structural Grace" is that house. It took me 2 years to build that thing but was a lot of fun - was my #3. I did not build this brick thing.

You need twice as many!
Like Gina said, another row in front, with the pots partially sunk into the ground and mulched would be "functional and aesthetically pleasing".  LOL

Yes - a row of 'guard figs'. Other wise up on those bricks it looks like an inviting bear buffet.

(Just kidding of course. It really looks nice as it is.)

Hey Michael, what size are your larger black pots (7gal?), and what is your source?  They look nice and beefy and just about what I'm looking for.  I desperately need to up-pot my trees this year.

Jason,
They are 15 gallon from B&T Grower Supply. 15 for $64. I like the pots they have and they were much better quality then the 5 gallon ones I just bought from my dirt supplier. I have bought from B&T several times and like their stuff. Customer service is horrible, though.
I kept my trees in 7 gallon for the first 4 years. I'm hoping that 15 g will be the largest I need as the trees are a nice size and every single tree in 15g produced very very well this year. I did put a 6 inch layer of composted manure in the pots this spring, although I won't claim that was any help. I am no where near expert with these guys. I just make sure they get fed, limed, watered and I add minerals and micronutrients. I also use the best dirt I can find.
I have just found a good source for bunny poo and will start using that instead of the composted cow manure as it won't burn the roots.

Are these the pots?

Those look like they're blow-molded, maybe not as stiff as I am looking for.  They're black and made out of the same type of material as the smaller pots you ahve pictured, right?

yes.
yes.
They aren't super stiff, but once filled with dirt I think they're great. The 7 gallon ones are 5 years old now and have been used at least twice apiece and aren't showing any wear to speak of.

I just found these on ebay but have never purchased from them. They have several sized, but this listing is for 15 gallon:

About the same price, but sturdier plastic. Slightly smaller dimensions. Shipping to my address is less than half as well.

They also have several listings for 7 gallon containers. This one is for 6 pots, there is another for I think 30. :  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nursery-pots-plant-pot-6-NEW-7-gal-TALL-RECYCLE-US-/300484141118?pt=Planters_Pots&hash=item45f640203e

The killer is shipping.

I frequently buy pots from this guy.  I've bought 25 gal pots that were great.  I meet him 1 block away from another friend who has a large DK fig tree.

Something to think about.

Where I live are several nurseries that place pots in the "reuse" bin. Yup one can find anything from 6 cell type for annuals up to the 25 Gallon pots. Usually I will pick some up as I leave when looking, but the best time of year is in september when they start to put out the leggy plants.

Free pot and sometimes a gift :)

Chris

@Chris, those are usually the flimsy blow-molded pots.
@Gina, Dom is right - shipping is the killer.  If those were $65 shipped, I'd go for it, but they're over $100 shipped, and that's an asskicker for me.

I definitely am looking for that rigidity of pot, though.

Shipping is often the killer. From 'grower supply' to the west coast shipping was more than the cost of the pots. Ack! The charges from the seller on ebay was 'only' $28 or so. I was comparing 15 gallon pots, for a total of about $100 for the heavier pots, compared to:

From 'grower supply' -
..................................................................................................

15 Gallon Nursery Container  15 pots $64.00$64.00

Subtotal:$64.00
Shipping:$72.07
Tax:$0.00
Total:$136.07
.........................................................................................................

Both are too rich for my blood.

I'd love to find a good price on squat 10 gallon pots. Till I do, I'm sticking with my yard sale used odds and ends.

One of my pet peeves (besides the cost of shipping) are those sites who require filling out name, address, email, etc before they'll tell me how much shipping will be. If I have a choice, I refuse to buy from sellers who insist on putting me through hoops.
