Too many fig trees?

You can find some good deals on craigslist if you are patient.

I was fortunate to find a local nusery that sells used pots very cheaply. How cheap? $2 per each 15 gallon pot.
Before spending a lot of moola on shipping, I would first check locally.

I agree shipping is rough and as I ordered other things I ended up paying $8 each for these pots, but the cost of running around sucking up gas and time just doesn't seem to be all that attractive to me.

If these last anywhere near as long as the 7 gallon ones are going to that's way less then a buck a year to house my figs in matching inexpensive pots. As I like my pots to match I'm happy with these.

I do look on Craig's list a a lot but never really find much. And as I live a ways from DC's suburbs if I have to drive 100 miles that's $50 wear and tear and gas.

It seems expensive but if you count your time, your gas, your driving costs and just the hassle of leaving home and dealing with people instead of being at home hanging out with the dog and the figs I'll go with new ones delivered right to my door.

But here's one more possible option. My wholesale nursery will deliver all the way from Richmond to here (2 hour drive) for $25. Check and see if your local wholesaler has these. Make up a company name and call them. Mine didn't ask for any proof I was a company and is very happy to bring me anything I'm willing to pay for. Shipping will be less this way.

Very true. You have to weigh all the options. I just ordered some saucers to put under pots. The $ hurt, but the odds of finding enough used ones that are fairly similar looking were very low. It was worth it to just bite the bullet and get it over with so I can use them this summer.

After Jon mentioned Craig's list, I went and looked. Sure enough there were some large pots of varous sizes that were a decent enough price. But I've gotten no reply to my reply. So now I wait.... Were they sold? Has the guy just not opened his email yet? Is he a serial killer?

I don't much like the uncertainty. But it if works out, it would be great. I'm not counting on it however. If this happens a few more times, that $100 for fifteen 15gallon pots is going to seem more reasonable. :)

Gina,
So true. I'm sitting here waiting for someone who called and got directions to come buy a fig tree from me and he's 3 hours late and not answering his phone. I'd just leave and go get tacos but he said he was coming from very far away. Craig's list is a crap shoot. I meet some very nice people but I open my house to folks I know nothing about and  some of them are very very flakey. The world is full of nut cases and I seem to attract some of the more seasoned hard shelled ones. oh, well, but you do have to be careful.
So;
Don't worry if your work is small and rewards are few
Remember that the mighty oak was once a nut like you

SCORE!

And I didn't even have to be patient. The lady called me back this afternoon (thankfully she wasn't a serial killer but a nice 'plant lady') and I went and purchased the pots. For $40 there were 23 15-gallon heavy-duty almost new pots, about 30 mixed 5-gallon, about 30 light-weight 3-gallon, and about 25? heavy-duty 2-gallon. That's just over 100 pots of usable size.

I am very pleased. The 15 gallon pots were worth it alone. And no shipping!

Now if I want to give a fig tree to someone, I don't have to worry about having enough pots. :) :)

As to Craig's list, you're right mgg - it's a mixed bag. Thus far I've only been a buyer.

Congrats! What a lucky score! I was moving stuff today from 3 to 5 gallon pots and realized just how many dang pots I've got around here. I also do all my veggies in pots but am moving them to those home depot 5 gal buckets which are a good deal. Orange for $2.60 or white 10 for $30.
One thing I realized was I used and bought over 150 1 gal pots this year. geez.
