Too many fig weeds

This is mostly relevant for the people from the wasp land, I guess.

Last year a few of the ripe figs were eaten by birds and squirrels . This season I see the fig seedlings everywhere on my property. It takes me more time too pull them out than some more traditional weeds. Especially it is hard to get the roots out.
This year I was hoping to have more ripe figs since the trees are getting more mature, that means next year I am going to face a major infestation :(

Am I the only one with this problem?

In spite of having many figs and living in Cali, I've yet to have a single seedling come up. Another reason for believing the wasp is not in my local area.

You might have pulled up the next galicia negra.  With figs you don't have to pull out the roots.  If you get the bottom node it can't come back.

Igor, my solution: Get a Sulcata. They are large tortoises that eat grass and weeds. You keep the fruit while they mow your lawn.

Bob,
I can ship them all to you !
Just please make sure you put my name for a cutting from that special one :)

It would be awesome for fig seedlings to grow on my property like they do on yours. I've only seen two seedlings so far :/ I'd rather grow seedlings than "known" varieties. Just like Robert said, you might have just killed a "Violette glow-in-the-dark Honey Col De Madeira".

I'd love to dig up those seedlings for you Igor, they'd be coming home with me :)

Do you have any pictures of them growing?

I've had several come up in my yard as well. Since my unknown mother tree had figs that were disappointing to eat, the seedlings are probably not worth saving. I chopped one down to the ground that was up to seven feet, but a side shoot I missed ran along the ground, over a hose, and rooted next to a brick wall. It is now five feet high. They don't quit. I feel sort of like Macbeth watching Birnam Wood advancing on Dunsinane, especially with all the new little cuttings rooting and leafing out.

Hi Greenfig,
Lucky you ! I'm on a fight to keep my last 3 seedlings alive - already killed 10 and that was not my initial goal :( .
I sprayed some seeds around the garden last year and monitored for small weeds to volunteer ... But nothing !
My 3 seedlings are from my "try to germinate non pollinated fig's seeds" experience... So this is my advice: Move to zone7 LOL .

Jds, sorry, I like it here, in a zone 10a! No moving in a near future :)

Dan, I will take a few photos today.

Mara, I totally agree with you, they do not quit. We may struggle to root a desirable cutting but a seed has an unmatch strength to live in this world. They grow anywhere very fast , and they lough at the gnats , they eat them for lunch themselves, lol
