too much water?

I am in SE LA (Z9) and planted an LSU gold fig and an Improved Celeste along a south wall of my house last month.  They are about 15 feet away from each other.  The Celeste is doing very well and has some little figlets on it.  The LSU Gold does not seem too happy.  We have had major rain storms here for the past two weekends, and I think it got too much water-it is very droopy, and some of the leaves are a bit yellow.  I have not watered the figs for a couple of weeks, so at least I haven't added any more water since the storms.
The soil where the figs are planted tends towards a clayish consistency (there was no place else to put the figs on my small lot), but I put a lot of leaves in the holes when I planted them to amend the soil, and I did notice some worms when I was digging the hole, so it's not complete clay.  Also, the two figs are in the same sort of soil, so I'm not really sure why the Celeste is doing well and the LSU isn't.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to whay I can do for the LSU fig?  Can I add some compost to the soil now?  I'm scared to do this b/c I don't want to disturb the root system, but I'm not sure what else to do.

Thanks for any help you may have.

Marie

Marie,

Put about 3" of cow manure compost on them for mulch and watch them babys grow.
