Hello Friends,
What are your top 3 fig varieties?  Why ?  (size, taste, yield ? )   :))

Hadoulis F White * best fig I ever tasted*.

-Color - Green
- medium size fig
-Taste -Sweet and Figy with an aftertaste ,
- It's a early heavy producing fig tree and bears two times
- it has a tight eye and drips honey
- self pollinated fig tree
Excellent for jam or to be dry ,
the skin is thin and sweeter with his own taste
The seeds are crunchy
The tree is cold hardy in zone 6b with no protection

Can't answer this question, too many variables to consider. Some figs are better some years and I have yet to taste all of those I am currently growing

Good questions, thanks for posting.

This is a very subjective question. Here is my very subjective answer, according to my tastebuds and preferences:

1) The Hardy Chicago Type Figs. Sweetness, flavor, productivity, soft texture, length of harvest season, tree vigor and adaptability... these trees have it all. If I could only have one fig tree it would have to be my favorite Hardy Chicago Type.

2) Barnissotte. Large delicious figs. Extreme richness that lingers on the palate. These figs are a special treat. Just awesome. The downside is that the tree is not that healthy or productive.

3) Black Madeira. Delicious, large, complex flavored figs. Filled with a wonderful syrup. Tree is small but productive. Still the gold standard.

the number one slot this year goes to

#1 Sal's G
Though this tree was planted just this year it quickly grew to 4 foot tall and produced a dozen or so ripe fruits with many more that didnt ripen up before the weather went south. the fruit itself looked to me very close to hardy chicago or MvsB at a glance. taste was surprising. like i said the fruit from this 1st year tree ranked number one this year. an explosion of flavor starting at peachy to slight nectorine but not overpowering that led to a smooth berry finish. it was a rather rich fruit with complex flavor. the jammy texter was the icing on the cake.

#2 Viollet de Bordeaux ( VdB ) Ronde de Bordeaux ( RdB )
VdB Another first year tree this year grown potted. though the tree did not bear heavey or grow very as quickly as other did it still did ripen up a few fruits. the fruit itself was larger than that of sal's or hardy chicago. it had a real jammy texture with a hint of raspberry. it was a very good fig (for a year 1) I cannot wait until it gets older.
RdB This tree planted in ground surprised me with how quickly it grew, much like a weed. it did ripen some fruits that hit a redish black when ripe. the classic hangmans neck was not to be seen on this guy so picking exact ripe time was harder than normal. the Figs i picked unfortunatly were just a little under ripe but still was tasty. the under ripe fruit to me had a rich taste and flavore almost of that of melon so it is tied for second place with VdB.

#3 MvsB a fairly fast growing tree like many of my figs in its first year produced a nice crop of medium size figs. the dark thin skin cracking when ripe reviles the jamy texture under. the taste reminds me of mulberry with sugar with a pleasent seed crunch.

Now I relize that this year was was not very good for figs. at least in my neck of the woods. looking forward to older trees with better fruit next year. but i would have to say i dont see how that sal's G that i have could get any better. it was just amazing.

that's hard to say like barry said. older tree gives better figs and some figs will improve with age of the tree. also how the tree is grown, container or inground.. weather that yr.. fertilizer.. will make difference.

here are figs that taste awesome from the very first fig off the tree in their first fig producing yr. CdDB, St. Rita, and Niagara Black. i'm sure there are others, but they are the ones i have.

I totally agree we you

I tried a couple figs back in 1647 that were to die for. Can't remember what the names were. Don't know if there was anything before those that were as good.

Pitangadiego I saw you back in 1647 you did not see me
you felt something hit you in the back of your neck that was me throwing a white fig at you.
You had such a confused look.
You even had a head full of hair back then.

On topic top 3  are changing but last several years nothing has knocked out
number 1 fig in yard  - Black Madeira.
