Hi Fruit_gobbler,
Fifty strains ... Really ? Did you win the Lotto ? IMO, no one can thoroughly test that many strains over ten years.
I would target five strains plus some for fun and playing .
Ten years that I have figtrees, and I haven't had the time and space to completely test even four strains.
In my zone 7, I must go for cold hardy and common ( no pollination ) figtrees.
My source for trees are nurseries and the choice is rather thin :
1. Dalmatie
2. Goutte d'or
3. Brownturkey
4. Sultane
5. Madeleine des deux saisons.
6. Pastiliere
7. Ronde de Bordeaux
8. Ice Crystal
9. Longue d'aout - Once available. I no longer can find it .
This year, I have access to "Noire de caromb" (late ripening for my Zone) and "Dauphine".
I'm still looking for a Brunswick - keeping in mind that Brunswick is supposed to be a commonly available strain ...
I of course could drive to south and go to some well known nurseries and feed the addiction ... but I don't have the space for,
and I don't want to test strains that won't make it here in my zone7.
Of course if you're in a milder zone with longer ripening season the choice is broader ...
