Tortoises LOVE Figs Also!

Not sure about the rest of my fellow fig enthusiasts but this year has produced a bumper crop of figs for us here in Maryland.

So much so that we have FINALLY had enough not only for our needs but to feed to the tortoises, see attached picture of tortoise Fig Newton party!

Figs are a natural food for tortoises and are especially a good food item because of the high calcium content.

Hope you all also had a good year…..although not over yet!

Still seeking Malta Black and other dark variety cuttings.

Enjoy

I love this picture................thank you for sharing.

This was awesome to see! :D In the South we have a sayin, they look happier than pigs in...well, never mind. LOL

Will,
Are those your pets?

Yes, I have a herd of Sulcatas and a herd of Red Foots.

I worked for 21 years at the Smithsonian National Zoo so I have alot of interests in tortoises and various bird species.

Nice! Thanks for sharing.

How wonderful, what kinds of birds do you keep?

Mostly large pssitacines/parrots....BTW, they also LOVE the figs as they are a natural diet for them during the breeding season

they look enjoying their meal :)

Awesome pic! Fantastic too that you have so many figs to feed them. My torts get all the bird damaged figs and occasionally a few surplus

Love turtles and torts , and am always stoping to move them off the road, but I did not know a group was called a herd, so that my learnin for the day. Kept invisioning a stampede so I googled and "groups of turtles may be referred to as a herd, turtle bale, or turtle flotilla." Not that I doubted you, just can't put the thought of a turtle roundup out of my head.

What a great picture !

...just found myself wishing I were a tortoise....

Hee hee hee -- a herd of tortoises...Head em up, move em out!  Get them doggies movin!

A group of turtles is called a bale. Just an FYI... :-)

Yep and when they stampede, you just might fall asleep

Ironman, the weather in Maryland has been good for figs of late but here in Rockville my trees are too young to give much fruit.  Maybe I should visit you and compete with the tortioses/terrapins for a few figs!

I wonder if them mischievous monkeys love figs too?

Some of my other local-critters (e.g., opossums and cat-birds),
sure have recently learned that figs are delicious food...

How cool!  Thanks!

I used to keep box turtles as a kid and they loved my dad's tomatoes, bird damaged (for the most part. . .),  I used ot dig up worms for them too.  It's cool to watch the way they tilt their heads to the side to spy their prey one-eyed before striking.  Great pic!

It makes me so happy when tortoises receive proper care.  I carried out a "midnight ninja rescue" for a tortoise some kids were abusing and neglecting and contacted the tortoise society in San Diego. They gave him to a proper home.  I hope to someone like you that will give him figs [image]

Wow,
So jealous of your tortoises. They look amazing!
I've been wanting to get a sulcata to keep at my elem school. We have several kinds of critters, but a sulcata would be a great experience to have in the building. I've been trying to contact breeders to see if anyone would be willing to donate a hatchling to the school... No good leads yet. Know of anyone?

Thanks,
Chris

SoniSoni, great work! That is very cool.
