You will never guess which fig was...... 1. Three year old---5 feet tall 2. Green fig 3. No tips burned no where 4. Took on 5 degree twice this year! 5. Completely leafed out weeks ago Anyone care to guess what fig this is? __________________ Dennis Charlotte, North Carolina/Zone 8a

Dennis I have some Desert King but none have fruited for me yet. They are just now about 1yr. old. Could you share how productive they are for you and maybe tell us what the flavor profile is in your opinion. I have planted one in ground now and may plant more depending on what you say. I am in zone 7 and do believe a fig has to live in order to enjoy it. __________________ goss North Ga. zone 7

My five foot tall desert king only burned about four to six inches on a couple or so of the top branches. Its growing like crazy now though. And of course my three feet tall hardy Chicago didn't know it was even cold not a burn any where. __________________ Annual Wish List: 2016 Galicia Negra

Yes it is full of fruits in British Co.,but in colder climates ,the tree can be intact but the fruit buds ,dead,because they die first,so we end up with a beautifull ornamental,as second crop needs pollination.

I lost the top half to freeze, even with it covered in a wire basket full of leaves. I can only guess that the leaves got wet then allowed water into where I had pruned, and then it froze. Hi Dennis My toughest fig trees were - Hardy Chicago-Italian 258-Malta org- I didn't have any more room in my garage, I laid them down and cover them with a couple of tarps, with the first snow we had I blew snow on them like an igloo and to my amazement they were alive. A I lost about 12 in my garage, I'm in zone 4 up state New York. Vito

Hi Donna I can't figure it out, I kept my garage at about 45 degrees. And lost more then a dozen fig trees, I know it was colder then that outside. Go figure. Vito

As I have mentioned in previous posts. In a pinch when weather turned suddenly cold, I would lay my 15 gal potted fig trees on their side next to the east wall of the house. None of them froze nor signs of tip freeze. Vito, if I can help replace any varieties you lost, please let me know.

Apart from Desert King ideally suitable for British Columbia & the rest of Pacific Northwest, get a Granthams Royal. In my opinion it taste better and this season it out produce my productive DK. I imported my tree from Encanto Farms some 5 or 6 yrs ago.
