Tracking when they fruit?

Does anyone track the dates they first see figs and the when they start harvesting? Since this  is only the second year I have had fruit, I decided to make a spread sheet to track:

  1. variety
  2. first site of fruit date
  3. start harvest date
  4. end harvest date
All my in ground trees have baby figs on them. My Italian Black and LSU Gold were the first, showing figs on May 8. The others all started showing tiny figs yesterday.

Seems like somewhere I have read that it takes about 70-80 days for a fig to ripen. We have hot summers here in AR, 90s to over 100 all of June to Aug.

Next year I may track bud break, but I expect it to be much more variable year to year.

Great idea , would definitely add to the Fig database... (there might be a thread already...?) have you don'e any search?

There might be some information you find useful here:

I saw some lists that had "early" or "late" type of classifications, but it did not seem to match my limited experience here in z7a. So I thought I would track my own, and at the end of the season I will make it available to anyone who wants to see it. However, I am sure that it is dependent on more than just zones.

When I see that these guys up in Jersey are in the same z7a that I am, it is hard to believe! My growing season is MUCH longer here. But it is just a reminder that there is more to growing climate than USDA zones.

nope. i don't keep records. it might fall into hands of some commies.

actually, i take a look at them everyday, so.. i notice when they have figs, and when they are ripen... i eat them. but i have general idea when they should put on figs and so on. this forum is a great tool in when i have posted what and when.. that's close to a record as i keep.

Thanks Gina. I had seen that one, but since I am in a very different climate than S. Cal, I decided to track my own. Also, I am very interested in seeing how long it takes them to go from first little fig bud to ripe fruit. Helps me to know when to start pinching off new ones so they don't waste the tree's resources if they don't have time to ripen.

If one is interested, I think tracking your own is the only way that makes sense. I'm like Pete however. I just watch and eat what ripens. I've had odd ones get ripe at just about any time of year. I've had a couple Bisirri darks ripen just this past week, but they were rogues in my opinion, and not anything I would ever expect again.

I am writing dates on my calendar, got some small fruit on my small Sal's EL about 10 days ago, they were OK had 2 Brebas only. They were berry flavor in taste.

GD,
I'm in z7 and put up my ripening chart from last year for the 70 varieties I tracked. I will do the same thing this year only the list should be larger. Just follow the link Gina posted - it's toward the end.

Gene, I would love to, but it is one of those things that there isn't time for.

I can't imagine tracking all the figs you have! But with only a handful like I have, it is easy and will help me decide which varieties to keep and which to throw out. My ultimate goal is 8-10 in-ground figs, giving me a long season and variety of fruits. I want enough so I can dehydrate figs to eat them year round, that is when fresh are not in season.

And MAYBE I will someday have enough to share with friends at church. Right now I am giving people small fig trees I've started so they can grow their own. That way I don't have to share any of my fruit ;-)
