trail of lsu black

I have LSU BLACK
LSU SCOTTS BLACK
LSU LATE BLACK
LSU ST.GABRIEL BLACK

GOING TO SEE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM. SOME THINK THAT BLACK AND SCOTTS BLACK ARE ONE OF THE SAME. SO FAR THE LEAVES ARE DIFFERENT BUT AS WE KNOW AT A YOUNG AGE LEAVES CAN BE DIFFERENT AS THEY FORM WILL ADD PICS AFTER shipping is done and morning coffee

LSU Black and LSU Scott's Black are the same.  LSU Late Black and LSU Gabriel Black are not the same.  LSU Late Black is NOT hardy at all!  It bears late in the season.  My LSU Gabriel is new to my collection.  I think CanjunB can chime in and provide more info on it or another member that live in LA.

LSU Black is a great fig!  I have a big one in a pot and a few other little guys.  LSU Black is one of my favorite black figs because it is so reliable for my climate.

How late does the LSU Black or Scotts Black start fruiting?  Compared with other common varieties?

I have the first 3 out the 4 you mentioned but the only one I've tasted so far is the Scotts black so I will be making the same comparison minus the st Gabriel black. I'll be waiting to hear what you think about them.

mine is fruiting right now

I guess I did not put that very well, "when does it produce fruit" or "when do you harvest them" would hopefully get me the right answer.  I can probably extrapolate growing seasons from Dennis' in Charlotte, but I don't really know how to compare with Louisiana.  I am trying to avoid too many late season figs that really won't ripen well here in Western PA, where the snow is finally gone from the ground (but not all snow piles in the store parking lots).

my lsu black is the first lsu fig to make fruit scott black has not yet. I have four good sources to do this trail. I think they are different so far. With one with fruit and leaves are different

Also have thibodeaux from bass never grew it before not sure as the color for sure thats, why its not in trial

I have a Lsu Thibodeaux from Cajunb  and the color is almost the same as the Scotts black, maybe just a tad lighter but they are 2-3 times the size of the Scotts black.

I grew a LSU gold last season only to be disappointed by its bland taste. shame really as it was
an incredibly gorgeous fig with its squashed donut shape and its pure white flesh. bummer!
I guess you can't win them all
may need to get bigger i have one and its preety good. I like dark figs seems to be always very thick taste

I have both LSU Scott's Black and LSU Black growing in ground next to one another .......Scott's Black is large black fig with strawberry color interior ,LSU Black is a smaller fig with gold interior and LSU St.Gabriel is a large round fig with no neck and tan interior ,all are great figs, but my taste buds prefer the St.Gabriel.As for as growth, the Scott's black is the faster grower in my area ......

I have the st gabriel too its a older fig tree ( 6) years old and is my favorite too. Was given to my mother by my niece. The house was sold so i have many cutting started. They root for a few months before making leaves. Very stange because usally i get leaves before roots.

thanks Brian.  Petal from the Past is really confusing the public.  The LSU Black that they sell is really LSU Scott's Black.  All of mine came from them.  I drove to Jameison AL all the way from Charlotte about 3 years ago just to talk to them about their LSU Black.  According to them, their LSU Black has always been called LSU Black.  It does have a red center and the figs are large.  I told them they were confusing the public b/c their fig has a red center and only Scott's Black has a red center.  They said their all their cuttings (trees they sell) come from their mother tree behind their nursery.  I saw it and it is a monster!  They said their tree is older than 10yrs and came to them from LA years ago.  I asked them to change the name.  They said they can not.  So, I labeled mine as PFTP LSU Black (LSU Scott's Black).  The only person that I know that has the true LSU Black is Marius.  I have cuttings from his tree and look forward to rooting them this year.

Thanks again Brian for correcting me!  It's all good!

Good discussion.

Marius has posted photos from his LSU Black and it had an amber colored pulp similar to what CajunB stated. I have also been told that Jon (pitangadiego) also has and distributes LSU Black.

CajunB and Jon, Will one or both of you please post photos of their amber-pulped LSU Black?

Questions for Marius, CajunB and Jon: What is the origin/source of your LSU Black? Would either of you care to sell or swap a layer or cuttings?

NO problem.........will post pics in the summer as soon as they ripen, received my LSU Black from Jon,I have cuttings available
