I have gotten cuttings from a few people on here and now have about 50-100 cuttings that im currently rooting. Some are rooting in root riot, bags with moss and 5 are already in plastic cups. I know you can plant root riot cuttings straight into pots normally. Unfortunately not all will root but the way it looks now a very good amount of them already have roots forming. I have a lot of four inch pots(pretty sure these will be too small for the summer), some six inch pots and some gallon pots. My goal is to plant them after they root and get them through the winter. I know I could buy a case of 100 1 gallon pots online but don't really want to spend the money for all of them then next summer when I repot them have all the extra pots that won't all be used. Would using 6 inch pots be okay and using gallons for what I have? If anyone has any suggestions on what would be the best and most economical way to do this that would be great. Thanks!

There are 3 large nurseries here that give away their used pots.  I got lots of pots from 1 - 40 gallon.  I would call around near you.  Some pay to recycle their pots so you'd be saving them $$.  I would go into at least gallon size.  By mid summer many will have outgrown their gallon.  Most of mine did.  You'll re-use your 1 gallon pots with next year's cuttings.

I wish I had nurseries that gave pots away where I live. There are only a couple nurseries around where I live in general. One sells the individual pots but its not worth buying them that way. One cleans and reuses pots and the other sells at deep discounts or saves all of their plants year after year. When I go in to buy my other plants Ill have to see what they can do

Try putting an ad on craigslist or other free community forum. I asked at work and was overloadrd with recycled pots immediately. I finally had to say no thank you I have enough.

Some smaller nurseries will give their pots away. When going around asking they asked what type of plants I would be growing and needing all different sizes. Told them about the figs and what types I was trying to work with. They told me where they "hide" their used pots and offered to let me get everything from 4" flat sets all the way up to 50 gallon trade pots. 

 Deal is when the figs were ready to spread around to bring them a few as the only figs they can get are Black Mission, Celeste, and Brown Turkey. 

Also, check with the garden shop mgr at Home Depot, Lowes or Walmart.  Often times, they have ones they are discarding due to plants dying, etc.  They are often happy to give them to you.  I did a search recently on Craigslist in my area and there were several where the 1 gallon used pots were 10-20 cents each.

My luck hasn't been so good - when I asked at a local nursery about whether they would give me old pots/containers that they would have to recycle anyway they refused and then tried to talk me into buying their new pots.  I guess I can't say that I would blame them but they weren't exactly selling them cheap.  I guess I need to find a nursery that isn't selling new pots.
