Transplating a black mission in ground

I bought a back mission fig from the nursery in a pot.It was in a bad condition.Leaves damaged from much sun exposure wth no water to the pot most likely for days.
When i purchased the tree i left it in the sun without watering it for 3 days. Then its leaves became
dry and most of them have dropped.I transplanted it to the ground and watered it very well.
Should i expect it to form new leaves? Is it possible to die?

Hello Lydios -

I assume you also mulched it well.  Try to keep the soil moist for rest of the year and put a 3 feet wide mulch about 6 inch depth around the tree trunk.  Mix some sea-weed fertilizer with water and soak the ground with it once a month for 3 times.  Do a scratch test on the trunk near to the ground and if you see some green under the bark - it is alive and just need your care to survive again.   I noticed - Fig tree respond well when you put a thick layer of mulch.  One of my in-ground trees (which was 3 years old) kept wilting in mid day sun even after watering in the morning.  I mulched it good and it then it started growing out beautifully and no more  wilting.

Good Luck

This sounds like what I did when I couldnt water for several days. It died.  However give it time it may survive. Now I water daily even the SIP's

If the tree is in the sun I would rig up some temporary shade until the tree recovers (hopefully). It will need some shade and plenty of water. There is a very good chance that some, or a lot, of the roots were killed by the heat and lack of water. So water often.

Don't fertilize it for about 3 months, unless you use a weak all organic solution. Chemical fertilizer at this time could further damage the roots.

Thank you for the replies.I mulched with grass clippings and pine needles.I watered very well.
Where the leaves have fallen, this part where the green stem of the leaf is being attached to the branch it is like a green hole,if you
know what i mean.I hope that means it is still alive. We will see.

The plant is forming new little leaves. I mulched heavily per suggestions. In Greece i observe big sized fig  trees growing next to pine trees with the pine needle floor supporting their growth probably. So i mulched with pine neddles mainly.
